Jael had not been sick, Chavez said. The zoo was closed on Saturday so that a necropsy could be performed that could help determine the cause of deat...

  • Health officials warn of rise of seasonal ills

Landry Sena, The Staff of The News|Updated Nov 11, 2023

As temperatures start to drop this season, it’s common for there to be a rise in the number of flu, covid, and RSV cases in the area. According to officials with Plains Regional Medical Center in Clovis and Roosevelt General Hospital in Portales, covid cases are trending upward. However, today’s numbers are still nothing compared to what was seen in 2021. “The volume tends to be comparable to patients seen last fall of 2022,” said Kaye Green, chief executive for RGH said. At PRMC, there were two covid cases being treated...

  • Need smart leaders to put us on sustainable course

    Karl Terry, Local columnist|Updated Nov 11, 2023

It’s true that the more things change, the more they stay the same. Take for instance our recently completed municipal election in Portales. Water (or the lack of it) was perhaps the most important issue in the City Council election. In our first election 124 years ago water was among the reasons that spurred an election. Since the dusty cow town sprang up along the tracks of the Pea Vine (Pecos Valley & Northeastern) Railroad in 1898 the town had struggled to fight fire. N...

Michelle Shover was a morning-show co-host on a Clovis radio station years ago. Lately this Farwell "full-time homeschooling mom" has been working as a part-time receptionist at a Farwell dentist's office. Thursday she had some time off and talked with The News. Q: Tell us about your relationship with eastern New Mexico and west Texas. A: I hold "dual citizenship" in Texas and New Mexico. I was born in Friona, in a year that's none of your business, and graduated from high...

  • Lady Blue play Canyon tough In 48-41 setback

the Staff of The News|Updated Nov 11, 2023

FARWELL – Two minutes separated Farwell from an impressive season-opening victory on Tuesday night. The Lady Blue took traditional Texas Class 4A power down to the wire, leading by one before the Lady Eagles scored the final eight points for a 48-41 victory. Juniors Jaylee Moss (20) and Dani Woodruff (11) combined for nearly two-thirds of Canyon’s offense. Neither team led by more than five points until the Lady Eagles (2-0) converted four free throws in the closing seconds. Canyon has won at least 20 games in 14 of the pas...

  • Lady Rams split final matches in district play

the Staff of The News|Updated Nov 11, 2023

Thursday night, the Lady Rams dropped their fourth combined match to the top two teams in 4A, falling to second-ranked Goddard 25-20, 23-25, 25-23. Portales (16-7, 2-4 district), ranked fifth in 4A by MaxPreps, now awaits its seed in today’s announcement of state volleyball brackets by the New Mexico Activities Association. Game 3 was decis...

  • Texico gears up for 2A run

Dave Wagner, The Staff of The News|Updated Nov 11, 2023

TEXICO – It hasn't been long since the Texico Lady Wolverines last garnered a state volleyball championship – other than, maybe, by their standards. Three years ago, Texico saw a run of six consecutive state titles under then-coach Kristan Scanlan – including four in what was then Class 3A – come to an end. Although they haven't won one since, the Lady Wolverines have reached the finals twice, including last season. This week, they're primed for a run at another title in Clas...

  • Lady Cats drop finale to Roswell High

the Staff of The News|Updated Nov 11, 2023

ROSWELL – Clovis High’s volleyball team struggled in its District 4-5A and regular-season finale on Tuesday, dropping a 25-11, 26-24, 25-11 decision to Roswell High. The Lady Wildcats (12-11, 2-4 district) were unlikely to make the 12-team Class 5A state tournament field, which was to be announced today by the New Mexico Activities Association. Meantime, Roswell High (14-9, 5-1) is on the bubble after finishing in a tie with Hobbs for the district title but losing out to the Lady Eagles (12-11, 5-1) based on head-to-head poi...

  • Rams advance to semis, shut out Bernalillo 17-0

Dave Wagner, The Staff of The News|Updated Nov 11, 2023

It was a bit of an unusual game – certainly by Portales High's lofty standards this season. After running roughshod through the first nine games of their season and then absorbing a loss at Lovington which cost them a potential top seed in the Class 4A playoffs, it took the Rams a while to put things together in Friday's quarterfinal tilt at Greyhound Stadium. Thanks to a last-ditch drive, helped by two late penalties on Bernalillo, the Rams broke the scoring ice on an u...
