Our people: 'Dual citizen' focuses on family

Michelle Shover was a morning-show co-host on a Clovis radio station years ago. Lately this Farwell "full-time homeschooling mom" has been working as a part-time receptionist at a Farwell dentist's office.

Thursday she had some time off and talked with The News.

Q: Tell us about your relationship with eastern New Mexico and west Texas.

A: I hold "dual citizenship" in Texas and New Mexico. I was born in Friona, in a year that's none of your business, and graduated from high school in Clovis.

I wanted to live in Clovis.

I live in Farwell because years ago I had a job with the Parmer County government and it was a requirement that to keep the job I had to live in Parmer County.

Q: Tell us about your family.

A: My husband is Dean. We've been married 27 years. I met him when he was in the Air Force at Cannon Air Force Base. He is a Yankee from Vermont.

I had to teach him to open doors.

When he would go to the store he wouldn't ask if we needed anything, he'd just go. That's not how we do things around here. I had to teach him a few things.

He's fantastic and I adore him.

But I can't take all the credit for fixing him, some of that's on his mom.

He works for the railroad.

Zachary is my oldest son, he's an automotive mechanic in Clovis.

He is in his junior year at Eastern New Mexico University. He is studying to be an electrical engineer.

Our son Zeke is a high school junior. He is an entrepreneur. He owns a freeze-dried candy making company called "Sweet Zee's."

He is a fantastic piano player.

My granny lives just down the street from us. She is Jerrie Tims but everybody just calls her "Granny."

She fell and broke her hip a few years ago so I called our church and asked to put her on the prayer list.

A few minutes later the church receptionist called me back and said, "What is Granny's name? Everybody just knows her as Granny."

She's the best granny.

My mom Beverly lives in Oklahoma and my dad lives near Waxahachie, Texas.

Q: You've homeschooled your two sons. What do you like about homeschooling?

A: I could talk about homeschooling for a long time.

My favorite part is just the time you get with your kids.

Homeschooling may not be for you, it doesn't have to be, but always vote to keep it your option.

Q: When you were young what did you want to be?

A: When I was very young, I wanted to be a singer.

I wanted to be Mrs. Elvis Presley but then he died and that dream got cut short.

When I started college in Oklahoma I was a psychology major.

But then life happened.

Q: You were once a big part of a Clovis radio show.

A: I worked for 99.9 FM when it was owned by Hewel Jones. Back in 2004 they were running a contest looking for a co-host. I entered and I won a job.

It was the best job I ever had. I loved it.

And I miss my co-host, that's you, Grant McGee.

I was there from 2004 to 2011.

Afterward I thought about being a stand-up comedian or a public speaker.

I was also inspired to write, so I started a blog about being a mom, "Mom to boys."

I didn't know I was funny until I got into radio; I just thought I was mean.

Q: What's your favorite place to vacation?

A: My very favorite place to vacation is the beach. I've only ever been to Galveston Beach in Texas so it's my favorite beach. Now I've been to New Smyrna Beach in Florida. It's a better beach but you have to go all the way to Florida.

Q: What's your favorite food?

A: Any kind of Mexican food. Anything you can smother in queso.

Tacos are my favorite.

Q: What's your favorite saying?

A: "Look at me not say anything."

It fits everything, no matter the situation.
