  • My turn: Saints good for finding names

    Helena Rodriguez

When my daughter Laura announced she was naming her soon-to-arrive baby boy, Giovanni, I said, “Is that a saint’s name?” In my Hispanic culture, I always heard children should have saints’ names. Why do you think there are so many people named Maria, Jose and even Jesus? I Googled and was pleasantly surprised. Giovanni’s an Italian name shared by many holy men. Pope Leo X’s name was Giovanni. One of my favorite saints, Padre Pio, spent many years at San Giovanni Rotondo in Italy and Giovanni was the name of another of...

    Sharna Johnson

Curry County officials have done nothing wrong in playing an informational video related to Tuesday’s election in the lobby of the courthouse, its attorney said Tuesday. A petition seeking removal of the video argues it is campaign material promoting approval of a new judicial complex. • Regulating rosaries will end in lawsuit

    Freedom Newspapers

Officials with a Colorado Springs, Colo., middle school are standing firm on an odd new policy. And they are placing taxpayers in needless danger of expensive litigation the district will almost certainly lose. It’s all because school administrators don’t want students wearing rosaries outside of their shirts. It’s a discriminatory policy that’s an affront to freedom of expression and religion. If not rescinded soon, a lawsuit should be welcomed as a necessary defense of fundamental freedom. School officials flip-flop, tellin... Full story

  • Letters to the editor: New courthouse part of growth

It is up to voters to decide the question of general obligation bonds for the design and construction of a courthouse addition, as well as whether a 1/4 cent addition should be made to the county’s gross receipts tax, designated for the design and construction of detention center renovations and expansion. As a judge of 21 1/2 years, I have observed numerous changes in Curry County. Clovis Fire Department grew from a single engine company that was manned by volunteers to 71 full-time employees housed in one main fire s...
