  • Cannon Idol: Overcoming shyness, airman takes top prize

    Liliana Castillo

Jessica Kiser Not only did Airman 1st Class Jennifer Edwards of the 27th Special Operations Medical Support Squadron overcome her shyness to even audition for Cannon Idol in May, she won the competition Saturday at The Landing Zone. When she was the last one standing on stage, indicating that she won, she said she was shocked, amazed and elated. Edwards said her nerves almost kept her off the stage all together. “I never thought I could finish,” she said. “I thought I was going to sneak out before today came.” Edwards...

  • Airmen encouraged to complete survey

“Your opinion matters” is the view of Air Force officials on the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” survey released July 7 to more than 98,000 randomly selected active-duty Air Force, Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve members. Selected airmen have received an e-mail with the survey from Westat, a third-party contractor, on behalf of the Department of Defense. Westat is a professional, independent pollster collecting and analyzing the data. The confidential survey is not a referendum on whether or not to repeal the law, said L...

  • Military mama: Learning language part of military life

Looking back on my first few months (and probably years) as a military wife I will admit I was often confused. If you saw me with that happy but oh-so-puzzled look on my face, it was likely because you were speaking “military.” The abbreviations and acronyms are truly a language of their own and tossed out so nonchalantly in every day conversation that I do recall it feeling like an exclusive club and I had not yet earned a membership. Now, I’m probably the one confusing the “newbies” and “civilians” with my specialized v...

  • Residents to take advantage of tax-free weekend

Jared Tucker New Mexico’s Tax Free Weekend Aug. 6-8 is very popular among consumers like Portales resident Monica Delgado. Delgado says this will be the second consecutive year she’s taken advantage of the holiday, and said last year she saved a bundle of cash when her youngest of two children started school. “I would guess about $150, because we went all out (on supplies and clothes)” Delgado said. Delgado’s daughter, first-grader Emari Rodriguez, said she’s happy too, because she’ll get to sport a Hannah Montana backpack to... Full story

  • Government always bigger threat

    Tibor Machan

The president of the AAUP — American Association of University Professors — issued a lengthy declaration warning the membership against getting involved with BP, the giant oil company whose operations have gone awry in the Gulf of Mexico and whose management is suspected of numerous failures and malpractices that have lead to the disaster in the Gulf. Of course, this has provoked innumerable people, pundits, government officials, bureaucrats, and cheerleaders of extensive government regulation of business to... Full story

  • Rodeos offer good, seasonal fun

Glenda Price Summertime in the Southwest is rodeo time. We’ve got 4-H rodeos, high school and junior rodeos, high class amateur shows, punkin rollins, ranch rodeos and, of course, professional productions. In the old days we had several especially fun amateur rodeos — the kind where you can pay your entry fee and get your number half an hour before the event. Usually, the events included horse races. We had relays, pony express and even some matched races. The race track circled the arena. There were no starting g...

  • Easier solutions would address health reform

Freedom New Mexico Robert Moffit, director of the Center for Health Policy Studies at the Heritage Foundation, met recently with a Freedom Communications editorial board in California for a discussion about the impending consequences of the new, 2,300-page health care law and simple, practical legislative alternatives to Obamacare that could better address problems in the U.S. health system. Moffit lamented Obamacare’s unnecessary heavy spending and its propensity to undermine personal and economic freedoms. He said C... Full story

  • School supplies still relevant in adult life

    Judy Brandon

Judy Brandon: Religion columnist It’s official … school supplies are out at all the stores. Newspapers are full of ads on school supplies and cardboard stands in stores have all the school supply lists from the surrounding towns. With the passing of July 4th, it seems that summer vacation is on the downside and anyone can tell that by seeing the endless supplies of backpacks, school paper, pencils, pens, markers, glue and other school supplies stacked on the s... Full story

  • a view from under the pew: amos fights the gongers

    Gary Mitchell

Gary Mitchell: Religion columnist amos the churchmouse: a view from under the pew Editor’s note: Amos is a churchmouse, who types by hopping on the keyboard shift keys, but he can’t operate the capital shift, and he shuns punctuation marks – except dashes and hyphens. amos fights the gongers boss i guess you heard about yesterday and the disastrous way i behaved how i ranted and raved and created emotional tidal waves boss it was rather pitiful even if i do sound critical here s the way it came down...
