Susan Guidry, 54, of Clovis, was behind the wheel of the white Ford pickup along with her 29-year-old daughter, 8-year-old granddaughter and 16-month-old grandson. Guidry said she tried to apply the brake several times and even went as far as attempting to put the truck into park... Full story
link _ Staff writer [email protected] The field at Yucca Middle School is green, the kind of green that means either a healthy rain or an astronomical water bill. Flip-flops and casual shoes are traded for cleats, as dozens of Clovis Wildcats hopefuls take the pitch twice a week. Tuesday night was league play night, as it will be on Thursday. Wildcats coach Greg Trujillo mans those, and the Monday/Wednesday/Friday weights and running sessions as well. That’s how the CHS soccer program is spending its July, with a few s...

link Christina Calloway Staff columnist In the great debate of which domesticated furry friend is the best, I’ve always been a sucker for a pup. I used to beg my mom daily for a dog when I was a child. I wanted to wake up one Christmas morning and see a Lab with a red bow around its neck under the tree. It didn’t exactly play out that way, but we finally wore my mom down in high school when a rescue came to our door. Before then, I resorted to playing with neighborhood dog...

No wonder there is joy on Wall Street, where the Dow Jones industrial average has traded above 17,000 for the first time. On Main Street, however, the mood is not yet joyous. Issued on the stock market’s last trading day before the Fourth of July, a stronger-than-expected U.S. jobs report calmed worries about the economic recovery. To be sure, there was good news in the numbers. Robust hiring in June helped to drive the unemployment rate down to 6.1 percent, the lowest since September 2008 when the Great Recession burst t... link Kevin Wilson Staff columnist Getting on the Internet every morning is a little wierder this week, and many of us couldn’t be happier. Monday saw the world premiere of the video for “Tacky,” the first song on “Weird” Al Yankovic’s new album, “Mandatory Fun” and a parody of the Pharell Williams “Happy” song that is upbeat but sometimes induces head scratching. Mr. Williams, what does a room without a roof feel like? I’d say incomplete, poorly engineered, or target...
