Area gets above-average rainfall so far

Staff report

The rainfall from Monday night’s thunderstorm brought Portales to above average in the historical year-to-day, according to Chris Luckett, meteorologist from the National Weather Service in Albuquerque.

Portales’ year-to-date rain total is 7.03 inches as of Tuesday said Luckett.

“For this month it is a little bit above normal,” Luckett said.

Monday’s storms brought 0.83 inches to the Portales area, but Clovis saw 1.05 inches of rain according to Luckett.

Portales and the surrounding areas may see more rain today and Thursday according to accuweather.com Meteorologist Andy Mussoline.

“(Today) will be cloudy with some sunshine and a chance of stray showers and a thunderstorm in the afternoon,” Mussoline said.

Mussoline said Thursday’s high will be 81 degrees, which is cool for this time in the year.

“The area is in the wake of a late summer cold front, but on Friday it will warm up. The weekend is going to turn hot and sunny,” Mussoline said.

Mussoline said next week will be hot and dry and the middle of the week could see highs in the 100s.
