  • Faith: Best to keep our eyes on 'the good'

    Curtis Shelburne, Local columnist|Updated Jun 29, 2022

Large letters on a big billboard read “See The Good.” White words on a black background. Caps and lower case, just as rendered here. I don’t know who paid for the billboard ad. It’s possible there was some fine print at the bottom claiming responsibility or enlarging a bit on the three-word admonition, but I drove by too fast to notice any. “See The Good.” Almost immediately, I saw the bad. Or, at least, the wrong. Maybe you did, too. I think they messed up by capitalizin...

  • Opinion: Truth out there, but harder to find

    Tom McDonald, Syndicated content|Updated Jun 28, 2022

Our institutions are taking a beating in the world of public opinion, and I think I know why. By institutions I mean those organizations that provide a measure of stability and security in our lives — our governing bodies, established religions, businesses and industries, news media and the internet, and other established bodies that we used to trust. There are a host of reasons why we no longer believe in them, and I’m convinced there is one root cause for our disillusionment — the lack of truth in what they tell us. I’m t...

  • Opinion: Court taking small correct steps

    Kent McManigal, Local columnist|Updated Jun 28, 2022

To those of you who are mad at the Supreme Court over two of its most recent rulings, let me agree with you. To a point. I also agree -- to a point -- with those who celebrate those rulings. I don’t consider the Supreme Court to be credible, and haven’t for years. Not since I recovered from the brainwashing I endured as an inmate in “public” schools. The Supreme Court stole for themselves the power to be the final say on what the Constitution means back in 1803 -- this po...

  • Opinion: Fire spotlights troubling culture in forest service

    Albuquerque Journal, Syndicated content|Updated Jun 28, 2022

An 85-page U.S. Forest Service review of the origins of the Hermits Peak Fire suggests the biggest wildfire in state history was caused in large part by a breakdown in protocols. But the review also revealed a troubling culture problem within the service. The review conducted by the Forest Service itself said a local team faced pressure to “accomplish the mission,” possibly leading to the crew to take greater risks in a rush to catch up on prescribed burns after postponements in many burn projects due to the COVID-19 pandemic...

  • Republican candidate Ronchetti visits Clovis

Steve Hansen, The Staff of The News|Updated Jun 28, 2022

Republican gubernatorial candidate Mark Ronchetti said his lack of experience in government is one of his greatest pluses. To think that experience in government should be a prerequisite for seeking office, he said last week during a visit to Clovis, is “arrogant.” President Joe Biden has had 50 years of experience and has left the country in a mess, he said, making a similar comment about New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s years of government experience. Ronchetti said he is a believer in small government. “Bigger gove...

  • Hoping someone can shed light on a mystery

    Updated Jun 28, 2022

I have a mystery on my hands, and one that I hope a reader might help solve. A year or so ago, my friend Patricia Rogers mailed me a photo album that she had bought at an estate sale sometime in the last few years in Albuquerque. "I love old photos and always look for albums and stacks of photos at sales," she told me. "The minute I opened this album and saw 'Clovis 1929,' I knew it had to be yours." She had planned to hand-deliver the album, but COVID got in the way, so she...
