  • Clovis native part of article in Texas Monthly

    Kathleen Stinson, Staff writer|Updated Jun 23, 2021

Clovis native Sandy Massey received an email Jan. 19 that shed light on a mystery she had wondered about since July 1966. A story about the young woman’s death, and the 55-year effort to identify her, is featured in the most recent issue of Texas Monthly. Every summer Sandy, then 15, would stay with her grandparents in Pecos, Texas, where they owned The Ropers Motel. On July 5, 1966, in the morning her granddad checked in a young man and a young woman, Massey said. Her granddad said the girl “was so young and (the man) loo...

  • Preteen a problem-solver

    Betty Williamson, Local columnist|Updated Jun 23, 2021

It is one thing to see a problem, point it out, and grouse about it, as many of us like to do. It is quite another to see a problem, mull over how to fix it, then set about doing that ... especially when you're only 12 years old. That is exactly what Kaylee Jo Summers of Elida did (the latter, not the former). Thanks to an effort spearheaded by this enthusiastic soon-to-be seventh grader in the Elida Schools, the existing playground area in Elida's shady green town park is on...

  • Faith: Important to listen to Conductor on our train journey

    Curtis Shelburne, Religion columnist|Updated Jun 22, 2021

I like trains. I always have. I’m not sure what it is that particularly fascinates me about them; maybe it’s the whole package. I like the sounds of their whistles. I like the sounds of their various linkages and mechanisms. I like the look and sounds of steam locomotives. (They seem magical to me, even if you don’t bump into Harry Potter and his friends on one.) I like the deep guttural roar from diesel locomotive engines. I like the massive “clang” when train cars are coupl...

  • Custom Classic returns this weekend

    Dave Wagner, Staff writer|Updated Jun 22, 2021

CLOVIS — Roger Jackson is glad to have the Custom Classic back. After 36 consecutive seasons, the 2020 tournament was canceled due to the pandemic. This weekend’s event at Guy Leeder Softball Complex features 88 teams, down only three from the 2019 event. Nearly half of them are from out of town, said Jackson, the tournament director, and that’s something that can help the local economy. “We’re real tickled we’re only down three teams,” he said. “It’s definitely neat to have it back. Everybody just wants to play and have fun...

  • Opinion: Going green better business model

    Tom McDonald, Syndicated content|Updated Jun 22, 2021

Ford's announcement that it's about to unveil an all-electric F-150 to eventually replace its gas- and diesel-powered pickups is a big pop-culture deal. This is America's most popular vehicle we're talking about. You'll find it on big-city streets and way back in the sticks. Heck, you can even find it as the vehicle of choice for some roughnecks down in the oil patches of the Permian Basin. It's a symbol of our American way of life. Taking such a pickup and turning its wheels toward the future is the kind of thing that needs...

  • Opinion: You're only responsible for yourself

    Kent McManigal, Local columnist|Updated Jun 22, 2021

You are responsible for yourself. No one else can be as responsible for yourself as you are, nor can you ever be completely responsible for anyone but yourself. Please do your best in the case of babies and others who are totally helpless, though. When your own responsibility fails -- and all of us have been there -- you can ask others for help. Friends, family, and charity are there to fill the gap when you fail to be as responsible as you should have been. The...

  • Opinion: No border stop is abdication of leadership

    Albuquerque Journal, Syndicated content|Updated Jun 22, 2021

Pressed by NBC’s Lester Holt earlier this month about why she hasn’t visited the U.S.-Mexico border to personally witness the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the unforgiving desert, Vice President Kamala Harris tried to make light of a deadly serious situation. “I haven’t been to Europe. I don’t understand the point you’re making,” Harris quipped, her words falling as flat as a TV sitcom missing its laugh track. Holt’s question seemed pretty straightforward: Why hasn’t Harris, who was tapped by President Joe Biden in March t...

    Cindy Kleyn-Kennedy, Local columnist|Updated Jun 22, 2021

Once school is out for the summer, teachers and parents are both often concerned with learning loss during the summer months. This is especially true at the end of the crazy year we've just gone through. One simple activity that helps counteract this learning loss is reading. Whether children read on their own, read aloud with other kids, or with parents … it all helps. Parents reading aloud to their children is particularly beneficial for developing stronger vocabularies, i...
