  • Their view: Hardships in life can build character

    Judy Brandon

Clovis resident Judy Brandon writes a weekly religion column for our sister paper, the Clovis News Journal. Here is her latest effort: What does it mean to serve the Lord with joy? I just read a book by W.P. Livingston titled, "Mary Slessor of Calabar." Livingston traces Mary Slessor's experiences in the harshest of conditions in the 18th century in Africa, yet she served the Lord with joy even in her difficult circumstances. Her early childhood was wrought with alcoholism in...

  • My turn: Dad's letters tell of different world

    Wendel Sloan CMI columnist

Here are more excerpts from my dad's 1940s letters to my mom in Mt. Vernon, Texas, when he had to live in distant cities for carpentry jobs to support their existing kids (eventually six). "July 9, 1944, Orange, Tex." "Dearest Wife — I am sitting here on Sunday night and I thought I would drop you a line as I am sorta lonesome…I have been here a week and it seems like a month. "This is the ungodliest place I have been. There are more honkeytonks, beer joints and whisky stores than any place I ever saw and more drunk peo...

  • Column: License issue hotter than wildfires

    Ned Cantwell CMI columnist

"So, how do you think Susana Martinez is doing now?" Barney asked, his voice tinged with a hint of sarcasm. This was going to turn mean. Barney is my friend from New Jersey who has nothing more to do than monitor New Mexico politics and taunt me with his right wing jabs. I made a valiant effort to steer the conversation onto safe ground. "Well, Barney," I said, "our governor is making solid progress in her goal to reduce the New Mexico transportation fleet. She just sold a 1983 Gulfstream Turbo Commander for $575,000,...

  • Editorial: Media coverage of missing girl tough call

    Clovis Media Inc

O ur newspapers received some harsh criticism for failing to provide coverage of a teenage girl who's been missing from her Clovis home since June 7. A few readers posted comments on social media sites claiming we did not report on the story because we did not "care about the child," and that "unless it bleeds it doesn't lead." Then, within 72 hours of the public outcry, we began publishing a series of stories about 16-year-old Aly Marques. We owe our readers some explanations. First, we almost never publish news stories...

  • Clovis drivers could be more bike-friendly

    Clyde Davis CMI columnist

Several weeks ago, we made a long anticipated trip to Lubbock, Texas, for the first Friday evening monthly arts tour. Trolleys and buses are provided to take guests from venue to venue. As it becomes rather crowded on the public transit near the 9 p.m. closing time, I noticed that every male over the age of 12, self included, was doing the courteous thing we were taught to do in training as gentlemen. Obviously, I refer to offering the seats available to women and senior adults. I remarked to my wife that this seemed to be a...

  • Reading strengthens imagination

    Karl Terry CMI columnist

In my young imagination I used to hunt tigers in the sandhills of eastern New Mexico. I'm pretty sure I never got out of my mother's sight but I still came back from my adventures telling all that had happened as my dog Knucklehead and I pursued the beast. I can only think of one reason for my young fascination with tigers, a storybook my mother read to me where a young boy surrenders his umbrella, shoes and new clothes to tigers to keep them from eating him. The tigers eventually become so obsessed with how they look that th... Full story
