  • Counties could see drop from turquoise

the Staff of The News|Updated May 5, 2021

(Editor's note: Both Curry and Roosevelt made the turquoise designation today, despite missing one or more of the three metrics.) After more than a month in the turquoise zone, Roosevelt County is at risk for dropping into the red designation and Curry County is likely to fall into the green designation when the state releases its newest “Red to Green” designations today. The state retooled its metrics to incorporate vaccination rates and loosen requirements for daily cases and test positivity. The state now measures cou...

  • Portales school board votes to keep five-day week

    Kevin Wilson, Editor|Updated May 4, 2021

PORTALES — Come next school year, Portales Municipal Schools students will again have a case of the Mondays. The board, after significant pushback from citizens who attended Monday's special board meeting, voted 4-0 to keep in place the calendar it recently approved with a five-day school week. Superintendent Johnnie Cain had put forward a four-day school week that would, like the current pandemic-impacted year, designate Mondays as off days for all district schools. The News attended the one-hour meeting virtually. Cain, who...

  • Lady Buffs subdue Gateway Christian

    Dave Wagner, Staff writer|Updated May 4, 2021

MELROSE - Melrose's girls play a quick, aggressive style of defense, and it causes opponents a lot of trouble. Gateway Christian actually plays much the same way, and can also make its foes plenty uncomfortable. The main difference between the two squads is that the Lady Buffs pack more scoring punch. Monday night, in their second meeting in less than two weeks, Melrose got off to a quick start and held the Lady Warriors in check for the most part in a 45-30 Class 1A state...

    Dave Wagner, Staff writer|Updated May 4, 2021

MELROSE - Melrose's boys may have been caught peeking ahead just a bit on Monday night. No more, says Buffaloes junior forward Logan DeVaney. Leading by just two points at halftime, the second-seeded Buffaloes erupted for 47 second-half tallies and eventually cruised to a 74-45 victory over Springer in a quarterfinal game of the Class 1A state basketball tournament. The win set up a Tuesday night semifinal clash between the Buffs (12-0) and third-seeded Elida (11-1), which...

Logan lawyer Warren Frost, representing plaintiff Rhyan Daugherty in the case, said Friday the jury of nine men and three women voted 9-3 in favor of his client, one short of winning the case. CLOVIS — The Clovis City Commission will have a new District 1 commissioner later this year, as Leo Lovett has accepted a promotion that will eventually take him from Clovis. Lovett, who was elected to the open District 1 seat in March 2020, has been promoted to US Bank’s rural relationship manager for the Rural Business Bankers of New Mexico. The job will require a move to Las Cruces by the end of 2021, and Lovett anticipates he’ll turn his commission resignation in three to four months from now. “There’s no timetable and no...

  • Cafeteria ladies took care of us back in the day

    Betty Williamson, Local columnist|Updated May 4, 2021

I never see a printed school menu without being reminded of my own years in the lunch line and cafeteria at the Dora schools. As a species, we humans love to complain. In those long-ago days before cell phones and the internet (also known as the 1960s and 1970s of my youth), one of the only things most of us had to grouse about was school cafeteria food. Our lunch ladies at Dora made that exceedingly hard. Most of our lunch ladies were also school bus drivers. It was a good co...

  • Opinion: Cannabis, green energy fuel growth

    Tom McDonald, Syndicated content|Updated May 4, 2021

In my little corner of the world, and probably in yours too, a different kind of economy is emerging. For one thing, we’re in the midst of a renewal energy boom, with solar arrays and wind farms being built by small armies of construction workers and technicians running all over eastern New Mexico. The once-booming oil and gas industry down south, in the Permian Basin that includes southeastern New Mexico, is being replaced a hundred or so miles to the north by wind and solar developments and electricity transmission lines s...

  • Opinion: Won't sacrifice liberty for worst of us

    Kent McManigal, Local columnist|Updated May 4, 2021

There will always be some members of the population set on killing each other over petty squabbles and imagined slights. Nothing you and I can do will ever change this; nothing government can do will stop it. Some people are just determined to be uncivilized. They may even prefer living this way, and wouldn’t change if given every chance. You will be more free once you realize this truth. Maybe the best outcome is for them to do society a favor by culling their own herd. How c...

  • Opinion: Texas should be cautious with development

Dallas Morning News, Syndicated content|Updated May 4, 2021

Texas has a lot to celebrate when it comes to growth and prosperity, and we can now add to that celebration the number two, as in two additional congressional seats that the state picked up in the 2020 census. Texas is entitled to the seats because we continue to add new residents to our state, either through birth or through their decision to come to their senses and get here as fast as they could. It’s a testament to reality that people and businesses want to be here. But as we perused the national press, we found more t...

  • CHS senior signs letter of intent

the Staff of The News|Updated May 4, 2021

CLOVIS — Clovis senior Bryana Gallagher hasn’t had a chance to play much high school softball, given the COVID-19 pandemic. Fortunately, she’ll have a chance at the college level, after signing a letter of intent with Pratt Community College. “It was a good school all-around, and I get to play softball,” said the 5-foot-10 Gallagher. “That made it a better school for me.” Gallagher said she’s being recruited as a pitcher, despite the small high school sample size. The 2019 season and the abbreviated 2020 season have no...

the Staff of The News|Updated May 4, 2021

CLOVIS — The Clovis City Commission is seeking two citizens from each of its four districts to serve on its charter review committee. The committee, required by the city charter to happen at least every 10 years, decides on recommendations to make to the commission for potential charter amendments or additions. If any recommendations are put forward, the city commission would then decide whether the items should go on a ballot for a special election or the next municipal election in March. The committee will be comprised o...

  • Business feature: Clovis woman does Derby in style

    Molly Adamson|Updated May 4, 2021

The Kentucky Derby is not just a sporting event. It promotes itself as the "most exciting two minutes in sports." And you can't wear just anything. "Your hat for the Derby is not just another accessory," explained Clovis' Maria Waters. "It should make a statement and be as unique as you." So when Waters and her husband Bob put the Run for the Roses on their bucket list, Maria turned to William Robins and Sway Productions to top off her wardrobe with a couple of hats. "I told...
