  • Another successful orbit complete

    Wendel Sloan, Columnist|Updated Apr 23, 2018

Today marks another completion of my yearly 584,020,178-mile orbit around the sun. Among those sharing the ride were four fellow travelers I recently encountered during a slightly shorter 17-day, 4,162-mile, seven-state sojourn on the third rock from the sun. At a Cracker Barrel in Amarillo, an elderly gentleman noticed Spooky, a former fellow Navy spy, and I admiring antiques. He told us about a restaurant that changed its name to “Granny’s Got One.” The name derived from...

  • Gentleman athlete worth remembering

    David Stevens, Editor|Updated Apr 23, 2018

MULESHOE — Everyone in Muleshoe knows David Wood. He's the retiring high school football coach who led the Mules to their first state championship in 2008 and averaged almost nine wins per season for 21 years. That's why the school district this month announced it was adding Wood's name to the place most of Muleshoe gathers on fall Friday nights — "David Wood Field at Benny Douglas Stadium." But who remembers Benny Douglas? We're not even sure how to spell his name — schoo...

  • Glam leisure steps up on runways

    Dnieka Hartsfield|Updated Apr 23, 2018

It's quite evident that fashion is continuing its increasingly casual dress code with styles mixing with leggings and sweatshirts to tennis shoes and tees. Designers have embraced the culture so much that one of the newest coined phrases and design aesthetic called glam leisure has made more of a presence on and off the runway. It's a step up from the athleisure trend that started gaining its popularity in 2015. Glam leisure stepped it up with more luxe and comfort in early...

The Rams took Game 1, 9-4, before needing just six innings to dispose of the Pintos in Game 2, 20-6. "We played really well," Rams coach Dusty Nusser said. "We didn't play well, defensively, in the first game. (But) Jordan Garcia pitched his butt off. Jordan's got a mentality that he d...

  • Texico tops Tucumcari, 21-0

The Staff of The News|Updated Apr 23, 2018

TUCUMCARI — Talk about no rest for the weary. Then again, Texico’s baseball team seemed far from weary on Saturday. The Wolverines were more energized than anything else. Texico ventured to Tucumcari Saturday and routed the Rattlers 21-0 in five innings, fueled by a combined no-hitter and 11 strikeouts from starter Ben Crist and reliever Cian Holmes, plus a 19-hit offensive attack. All that occurred following a quick turnaround from Friday night’s home doubleheader against Estancia, which the teams split. Texico had dropped t...

  • Wildcat track teams take first in Artesia

The Staff of The News|Updated Apr 23, 2018

ARTESIA — The Clovis boys track and field team continues to top its competition — and itself. Not only did the Wildcats win Friday's Bulldogs Relays in Artesia — their second meet title in the span of a week — they also posted some new state-qualifying times and bettered some old ones. Plus, there was a new meet record set by Clovis' Burgin Foster, whose mark of 15-1 inch in the pole vault beat the old meet record by an inch. The Wildcats won Friday's meet with 117 points, far...

  • Minimalism isn't good sometimes

    Karl Terry, Columnist|Updated Apr 23, 2018

I think I could make people believe I’m a minimalist if I can keep them from looking in my closet or garage. I think my life seemed to part with minimalism about the time I got married. I had everything I needed in an 8-foot x 40-foot mobile home when I met the love of my life. I did own two vehicles at the time but that was the biggest extravagance. One of those vehicles was a pickup that was 25 years old, though. I think driving it enhanced my minimalist image. As a young m...

  • Mayfield making his own legacy

    Kyla Myers|Updated Apr 23, 2018

CLOVIS — Every story has a beginning, middle and end. The differences between them is where the climax occurs. The impressive thing about Shad Mayfield, he doesn't appear to have reached his peak. The 17-year-old Clovis native is the son of Sylvester and Joellen Mayfield. He and his sister, Shelby Mayfield grew up in a rodeo family and it's all they've ever known and wanted for themselves. Their legacy and bloodline in rodeo began 30 years ago with Sylvester. He established h...

  • Something for everyone

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Apr 23, 2018

CLOVIS — Billed as "the largest garage sale in eastern New Mexico," organizers estimated more than 1,000 people came in search of bargains on Saturday during the High Plains Garage Sale at the Curry County Events Center. Events Manager Stephanie Pierson said 50 vendors were on hand for the event, the majority of which were just eastern New Mexico residents looking to earn a few bucks and clear out some closet space. The majority of the vendors — paying $20 each — had just your...

  • Ranchvale Trojan finds way home

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Apr 23, 2018

RANCHVALE — The oldest surviving artifact from the original Ranchvale school — a 60-plus-year-old Trojan logo from the school's gymnasium — is back home. Ken Davis is the grandson of J. Emmet and Ellen Davis who in the 1930s donated the land where the Ranchvale school is located. Ken Davis, 74, said he believes the school logo was painted on the center of the gym floor in the early 1950s, following a summer of students rollerblading in the gym. When the old gym was torn down...

  • Reporter's Notebook - PHS choir takes championship

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Apr 23, 2018

  • Delivered box meals have benefits

    Kevin Wilson, Managing editor|Updated Apr 23, 2018

What do you get for the parents that have everything? Well, my parents don’t have everything ... just everything they really need. And they can get whatever they want if they don’t have it, within reason. And that makes them a difficult box to check during Christmas season. Wait, I said. I’ll get them something everybody wants every day — dinner. One of my favorite podcasts had a coupon code with one of those meal delivery services, and that way I can buy a gift and get an honest review from people I trust. They liked it, and...

Principal Grace Jones helped put the last shovels-full of dirt around the base of a cluster of white birches being planted in front of the school. Custodian Dan Raneri was nearby to assist. Sue Potter, vice president of the Highland Parent-Teacher Association, said the other tree would be planted in a few...

  • Eastern baseball team sweeps doubleheader

The Staff of the News|Updated Apr 21, 2018

SAN ANGELO, Texas — After allowing 49 combined runs in its previous three games — all of them losses — the Eastern New Mexico baseball team rebounded Saturday, beating Lone Star Conference foe Angelo State 9-4 to end their losing streak, then sweeping the doubleheader with an 11-4 rout in the nightcap. 20 total runs was a nice way for the Greyhounds to move past their struggles, and got it started in the first game. Eastern first went ahead in the top of the fourth inning by scoring three runs. Eurick Perez led off with...

PORTALES — Portales pulled a rare feat in prep softball Saturday — the 17-run swing. The Rams, down 11-2 in the second game of their District 4-4A doubleheader against Hope Christian, flipped the script with a 14-run fourth inning and kept on scoring to notch a 20-12 victory at Wheeler Park. The win, combined with the 11-6 opening win, puts Portales 6-0 in district and back to .500 for the first time since March 24. They'll host Clovis in a Tuesday doubleheader with a cha...

  • Meeting with dictator a smart, calculated risk

    Chicago Tribune|Updated Apr 21, 2018

In July 1971, President Richard Nixon jolted the international status quo — and set diplomatic nerves worldwide fluttering — by announcing he would visit China. “Never in history, to our knowledge, have diplomatic relations progressed so fast from the Ping-Pong table to the Presidency,” the Chicago Tribune’s editorial page breathlessly observed. Nixon’s bold overture reshaped the modern world and has paid vast dividends to Washington, to Beijing and to the general stability of global geopolitics. Now another potentially...
