  • Baskett back in town for golf tournament

    Kevin Wilson

This weekend, it’s all about Fore and Four for the Baskett family. The once-again Philadelphia Eagles receiver and 2001 Clovis High graduate is coming back for his annual benefit golf tournament. Hank Baskett III, who re-signed with the Eagles after a one-year stint with the AFC champion Indianapolis Colts, doesn’t have any NFL teammates coming to Chaparral Country Club. Nor does he have his wife, former Playboy model and current reality TV star Kendra Wilkinson, as she is shooting footage for a workout video. “Little Hank’s...

  • Offense dominates in ENMU scrimmage

    Kevin Wilson

BLACKWATER DRAW — The Greyhounds coaching staff didn’t like the sight of the offense scoring at will Saturday morning. So they made the defense watch the same thing. Saturday marked a win for the offense in the final Eastern New Mexico University football scrimmage before the upcoming Green and Silver spring game, as sophomore-to-be Wes Wood displayed control of the “NASCAR offense” he inherited from the departed J.J. Harp. Wood, who led Muleshoe to the Class 2A Division I state title two years ago, led the first...

  • Letters to the editor: Obama has delivered on platform

Obama has delivered on platform Glenda Bly’s April 6 letter (“Hard work is the American Way”) proves ignorance of the truth is still bliss. First, the bill President Obama just signed is totally a health-care reform bill. Something that has been tried for decades is now signed, sealed and delivered. It appears Glenda and the rest of the Republicans still cannot accept the fact that Obama is our president for 2 3/4 more years and very probably for the next 6 3/4 years as he has proven that he is a man of action and does not m...

  • Let’s hope for centrist replacement

Freedom New Mexico All eyes are on President Barack Obama’s list of potential nominees to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens. Many argue the real question is whether the nominee will be left-leaning, left or far-left. But President Obama might opt for a centrist rather than spark more partisan warfare by nominating an extreme liberal. Obama said his nominee would have a “dedication to the rule of law and a keen understanding of how the law affects the daily lives of the American people.” The president al... Full story

  • Foreclosures' effect on blighted properties hard to determine

    Sharna Johnson

The city’s foreclosure suit against derelict and delinquent property owners is progressing but what if any effect that will have on Clovis’ battle against blight has yet to be determined. Clerk Leighann Melancon said in the two weeks since the city filed its foreclosure against more than 100 property owners, a little more than half a dozen people have settled their debts, getting their properties off the list. And she expects many more will do the same before the 60-day win... Full story

  • Baskett golf tourney goes off without hitch

    Kevin Wilson

CLOVIS — A light rain wasn’t enough to dampen the desire to golf in Hank Baskett III’s Tee’d Off About Child Abuse tournament Saturday at Chaparral Country Club. Or, come to think of it, the notion of pulling in charity donations for The Oasis by any means necessary. Hank Baskett II, minutes before the opening ceremonies, joked to an aide that she shouldn’t be giving change back for purchased mulligans. “Hey, hey, hey,” he said with a laugh. “Don’t give money back.” The charity tournament drew 30 teams, with Baske...

  • Ranch life was hard work

Editor’s Note: This is another in a continuing series about the H-Bar Ranch and the hardships of life on the plains before 1900. Bob had been appointed foreman of the H-Bar Ranch by his cousin, Jim Newman, and brought with him his new bride and her two sons, Eddie and Bill. There were fir...

Frank Cole, nominated by Sistar Yancy of Christian Believers, is the Hospice of the Sandias volunteer of the month for April.
