  • Transparent Nord Stream investigation required

    Rube Render|Updated Mar 19, 2023

Approximately two months ago, the Seymour Hersh article, “How America Took Out the Nord Stream Pipeline” appeared on Substack. No major newspaper chose to publish this extensive, detailed look at one of the most shocking acts of terrorism since the destruction of the Twin Towers. More recently, articles have appeared in the “New York Times,” “The Washington Post” and “The Times” (used to be “The Times of London,”) from a variety of authors alleging that a different set of ac...

The Santa Fe New Mexican, Syndicated content|Updated Mar 18, 2023

SANTA FE -- With just a little over a day to go in the 2023 legislative session, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed a bill into law extending learning time for students in the state's public schools. House Bill 130 will mandate an increase in learning time in public schools to 1,140 hours, plus additional professional development time for teachers, while allowing districts some flexibility in when to add the hours. That means an extra 150 hours for students in first through sixth-grades. For secondary students, it’s 60 a...

  • Time to move on and dream about Portales' next skyline

    Karl Terry, Local columnist|Updated Mar 18, 2023

The skyline in my little hometown underwent a big change in the last week. At the time of this writing the old concrete Worley Mills grain elevator was still in the sky above downtown Portales but it looked more like some of the bombed out sky rise apartment in Ukraine’s large cities. At the rate the demolition is proceeding it may be down completely when you read this story. The skyline for the prairie town of Portales has had its share of character. We had twin “high ris...

  • Commentary: Good job unexpectedly comes open

Jon Mark Beilue, Sports columnist|Updated Mar 18, 2023

A year ago, Mark Adams was the toast of West Texas, a symbol of patience and level-headedness, an example of old-fashioned defensive toughness with a bit of the everyman modesty. He was almost revered in Lubbock and Texas Tech “for not getting on that plane,” a reference to when head coach Chris Beard stunned Red Raider basketball fans in leaving for rival Texas in early April 2021. As legend goes, Beard told Adams, his top assistant and defensive mastermind, that if he wan...

  • Roswell High takes pair of wins over Lady Rams

the Staff of The News|Updated Mar 18, 2023

PORTALES – To say the least, it was a rough night on Tuesday for Portales High’s softball team. The Lady Rams held Roswell High in check for a while in the opener, but when the Lady Coyotes started scoring things got out of hand in a hurry. Roswell High improved to 7-1 with an 11-1, 20-6 sweep of PHS at Wheeler Park, with both games ending in five innings on the 10-run rule. Portales (3-4) took a 1-0 lead in the second in Game 1 on senior Casyn Mitchell’s run-scoring double, but the Lady Coyotes jumped in front in the third...
