Roswell High takes pair of wins over Lady Rams

PORTALES – To say the least, it was a rough night on Tuesday for Portales High’s softball team.

The Lady Rams held Roswell High in check for a while in the opener, but when the Lady Coyotes started scoring things got out of hand in a hurry.

Roswell High improved to 7-1 with an 11-1, 20-6 sweep of PHS at Wheeler Park, with both games ending in five innings on the 10-run rule.

Portales (3-4) took a 1-0 lead in the second in Game 1 on senior Casyn Mitchell’s run-scoring double, but the Lady Coyotes jumped in front in the third, then added nine runs over the final two frames to salt it away.

Senior Sarai Morales allowed five hits over five innings, and also contributed one of three Roswell High home runs at the plate. Sophomore Jazmen Lucero went 2-for-2 with a double and two runs batted in, while sophomore Alayna Tarin was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, sophomore Emily Marquez finished 2-for-3 with a double and a home run and sophomore Emily Esquivel added a home run.

Mitchell and sophomore Myleigh Banda were both 2-for-2 for the Lady Rams.

In the second game, Roswell High broke the contest wide open with a nine-run fourth. Esquivel went 4-for-4, scoring five times and driving in two, while freshman Bella Ornelas finished 4-for-5 with a double, three RBIs and a pair of runs scored.

For the Lady Rams, Mitchell completed a perfect day at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run, while senior Emma Long doubled in three at-bats, knocking in two runs and scoring once.

Portales returns to action on Thursday in a three-day tournament at Dexter, facing Clovis in a 9 a.m. quarterfinal matchup.
