  • House panel derails veto override

Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday saved Gov. Bill Richardson the embarrassment of a veto override. The committee tabled a bill that Richardson had vetoed last year — a veto that the Senate recently voted overwhelmingly to override. The bill would have forced state agencies to provide the Legislative Finance Committee with confidential information about contracts and programs. The measure last year had unanimously passed both chambers of the Legislature before Richardson rejected it. The House...

  • Faith best legacy to leave behind

    Joan Clayton

My ancestors left me a legacy more precious than gold … a strong faith in God. From my great grandparents to my parents, I have come to know the purpose of life. “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter. Fear God and keep his commandments for this is the whole duty of man” (Ecclesiastes 12:13). I still see my grandfather with his Bible on his knees. My grandmother’s singing echoes in my ears. I well remember the day she faced serious surgery. “I give it all to you, God, and if I die, I can’t help it.” To me, her...

  • Manageable life comes from following God's plan

    Judy Brandon

I will never forget the feeling I had when our children were little and the weather caused schools to be called off for the day. I would get up eagerly in the morning, listen to the radio, watch the television and just hope that conditions were bad enough that school would be cancelled. I enjoyed those days because we were all home together and there was no rush and no deadlines. School mornings always brought tight schedules. The children and I were going our separate ways by...

Thus, Indiana Democratic Sen. Evan Bayh’s announcement that he will not seek a third term in November is laudable on at least one level. Whether it represents the sort of altruistic desire to serve the public better that he tried to evoke in his statement is another matter. Certainly, few America...
