  • Government habits hard to break

    Tibor Machan

Meg Whitman is running for governor of California and I haven’t a clue what her chances are. I know I don’t want someone like Arnold to get elected, but then I don’t want hardly anyone to be either re-elected or elected. And Meg Whitman offers a good example of why. Her ads on California TV stations are all about giving stuff to people. Yes, her big, novel, revolutionary political pitch is to provide more and more stuff to the electorate. She says so explicitly in her television ads. And this pattern is repeated all around th...

  • Prestigious line of horses still exists

Nothing can equal the thrill of riding a horse running so fast your eyes water and your hair feels as if it’s leaving your head. If it’s a race and you and the horse are passing all the others the thrill is, of course, quadrupled. An almost equal thrill comes with riding a fast horse in barrel racing, pole bending or any other arena event. Then, if the horse stops or turns with just a touch, you’ve really got some excitement under you. That’s just my opinion, but I bet plenty of others share it. In New Mexico and other S... Full story

  • Bayh decision leaves questions unanswered

Freedom New Mexico It is generally praiseworthy when a politician announces that he “doesn’t love Congress” and has come to the conclusion that he can serve the public more effectively from a position in the private sector. Thus, Indiana Democratic Sen. Evan Bayh’s announcement that he will not seek a third term in November is laudable on at least one level. Whether it represents the sort of altruistic desire to serve the public better that he tried to evoke in his statement is another matter. Certainly, few America... Full story

  • Let's put ranch families out in space

One of the qualities that characterize dedicated ranchers and farmers is a joyous commitment to hard work. It’s sort of an odd combination of curiosity, independence and bravado. They actually crave the struggle like long-distance runners crave the race. They love their job. Ranching is not a sport. It pits man against all that nature can throw at them year after year. It takes a hard-headed person to keep pushing back. That’s how frontiers were conquered and the west was won. Today’s ranchers possess the same quali... Full story

Getting out? Opportunities in the Air Force Reserves abound for soon-to-be separating active duty airmen. The Palace Front program allows those separating from active duty to stay in the military through the reserves at the end of their active-duty military commitment. Palace Chase provides an opportunity for active duty officers and enlisted members to voluntarily transfer from active military service early. The member’s remaining active duty service commitment or term of enlistment may be waived, for approved applicants, i... Full story

  • Heart health important for women

PHOENIX — Heart disease. Many people think of it as a man’s disease, but women can get it too.
