  • Legislative session to focus on budget

    The Santa Fe New Mexican

A competing bill would leave that decision to parents. Martinez...

  • Time for some GOP candidates to call it a day

    Freedom New Mexico

The TV networks declared Mitt Romney the winner in New Hampshire about five seconds after the polls closed, so commentators had to scramble to find something interesting to say the rest of the night. It wasn't easy. Mr. Romney had been expected to win Tuesday's GOP primary and did. Jon Huntsman tried for an upset that didn't happen. Rick Santorum's post-Iowa sizzle fizzled. And then there was Ron Paul. The libertarian congressman from Texas came in second, then delivered a rousing speech to wildly enthusiastic supporters. If...

  • Their view: It is OK to acknowledge your weaknesses

    Curtis Shelburne

Curtis Shelburne, pastor of 16th & Ave. D. Church of Christ in Muleshoe, writes a weekly religion column for the Portales News-Tribune website. Here's his most recent effort: What have you learned from your successes and failures?" His answer: "I don't see myself as having failures...

  • Local legislators share priorities

    Kevin Wilson

The New Mexico Legislature begins noon Tuesday in Santa Fe. The Legislature has two different types of sessions. In odd years, the session runs 60 days and is full of legislation that encompasses nearly everything one could imagine. In even years like 2012, the session is 30 days long and is limited mostly to the state budget. Any non-budget item needs pre-authorization from Gov. Susana Martinez. We made attempts to contact area legislators — and were successful getting everybody except Sen. Stuart Ingle, R-Portales; and R...
