The release did not otherwise identify the child. Since the beginning of the flu season in October, the department reports 52 pneumonia and influenza-related deaths. The department warns that the flu has still not reached peak activity, and that the percent of visits to outpatient medical clinics for flu-like symptoms was higher and earlier than t...

  • Hanging fresh calendars time-honored tradition of new year

    Betty Williamson|Updated Jan 9, 2020

There is something eternally hopeful about hanging up a fresh calendar. Or nine. I recently completed that time-honored annual tradition of trading out all of last year’s calendars for current models. The newest one from the Roosevelt County Electric Cooperative hangs front and center above my computer. The artwork on it — a lovely rendering of the Rogers community school as it looked in the 1940s — takes me right back to seeing the original in progress when I met Arch artis...

  • U.S. to impose more sanctions against Iran

    Benjamin Kail, Masslive.com|Updated Jan 8, 2020

President Donald Trump said Wednesday that the United States would impose harsh new economic sanctions on Iran and stood prepared to use America’s military prowess to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, but the president also called on nations to work together to embrace peace. “As long as I’m president of the United States, Iran will never be allowed to have a nuclear weapon,” said Trump, whose withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear agreement negotiated between Iran and the Obama administration has sparked almost two yea... Full story

  • Slept well in the historic funeral home

    Carrie Classon|Updated Jan 7, 2020

My husband Peter asked what I thought about the link he’d sent me as we prepared to head home from the holidays. “The funeral home?” I asked. “Yeah, that one.” “I thought it was a joke.” “No, it’s right on our way.” “We’re going to spend the night in a funeral home?” “It’s very inexpensive!” I suddenly felt like I was in the opening scene of every horror film I’d ever watched. Peter wanted us to spend the night in a historic funeral home on our way home. The funeral home had been converted into an Airbnb. It was both right...

  • Know a few things for sure at the beginning of this new year

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated Jan 7, 2020

As I write this week’s column, can I just admit from the outset that I’m not sure I should be writing this week’s column? At least, not on this topic. I could easily come off as grouchy and pessimistic, depressed and depressing. Better to keep my mouth shut. But I’ll give it a shot. Writing, that is. I’m not disciplined enough to shut up. You see, just a few days ago we blew right into and right past the eighth day of Christmas, better known as New Year’s Day. Personally, I ca...

  • Remembering cowboys from 35 years ago

    David Stevens - Staff|Updated Jan 7, 2020

Just 21, newly married, he wasn't quite 6-foot tall and he wasn't close to 150 pounds. Lane Frost loved riding bulls. The Pro Rodeo official media guide in 1985 gave us a glimpse of his passion for the sport. "My dad was still competing when I was about three," he told promoters for the guide. "Mom says I'd always fight to stay awake for the bull riding. And if we'd leave before that, I would really throw a fit." Frost finished eighth among bull riders in the 1984 National...

  • Quay County: Home to dozens of ghost towns

    Ron Warnick|Updated Jan 7, 2020

On a wall of the Quay County Clerk's office hangs a 1964 map of ghost towns in New Mexico. The New Mexico Bureau of Mines and Mineral Resources compiled the map, of which copies are available from the office for a fee. In Quay County, the map shows about 20 ghost towns that might be unfamiliar even to longtime residents - towns with names such as Tipton, Revuelto, Canode, Adberg, Ard and Hanley. It turns out the map far underestimated the number of defunct settlements in Quay...
