SATURDAY PREPS: Wolverines grab early lead in district race

TEXICO – Texico jumped out to a 13-point halftime lead and held on to beat third-ranked Santa Rosa 57-52 on Saturday to take the early lead in the boys District 6-2A race.

The Wolverines (10-10, 2-0 district) put four players in double figures, led by senior Cade Figg with 17 points. Meantime, senior Daltyn Cain, junior Alex Fuentes and freshman Jett Curtis all finished with 11.

The Lions (16-5, 1-1) went on a 22-13 run in the third canto to pull close as sophomore Maddox Lucero, scoreless at halftime, funneled in 16 of his 18 points in the stanza. Senior Josh Cordova added 14 for Santa Rosa.

In other boys action on Saturday:

Grady 76, San Jon 16 - The host Bronchos got 17 points from 6-foot-5 sophomore Jeter Beyer in his first varsity appearance and had no trouble with the independent Coyotes (0-10).

Sophomore Jai Padilla added 16 points while freshman Noah Stanfield and eighth-grader Terell Foote tallied 10 apiece for the Bronchos (8-9), who rolled to a 52-7 halftime advantage.

Sophomore Truitt Sallee had all but three of San Jon’s points in the contest.

In girls play on Saturday:

Texico 40, Santa Rosa 22 – The Lady Wolverines ran away to a 22-6 halftime lead and cruised past the struggling Lady Lions in District 6-2A at Texico.

Seniors Desiree Holman and Kaya New had nine points apiece for Texico (7-12, 1-1), while freshman Hailey Chavez paced Santa Rosa (2-17, 0-2) with eight points.

Grady 70, San Jon 27 – The homestanding Lady Bronchos rolled to a 29-7 first-quarter lead and cruised to an easy win.

Junior Juanita Ramires netted 22 points while senior Taylor Foote hit three 3s in the first quarter and had all 17 of her points by halftime for Grady (8-10). Senior December Garza finished with 12 points, and freshman Lexee Leppke had nine.
