Melrose to host EPAC tournament

MELROSE – The annual Eastern Plains Athletic Conference tournament begins its annual four-day run with four games today at Melrose.

Pairings for the event were announced Sunday, with all games scheduled for Melrose H.S.

Today’s games matches the No. 1 vs. No. 8 and the No. 2 vs. No. 7 seeds in boys and girls play, with the 4-5 and 3-6 matchups to be played on Thursday. Consolation and championship semifinals are slated for Friday, with eight final-round tilts on tap Saturday.

Championship games on Saturday are slated for 6:30 p.m. for the girls and 8:15 p.m. for the boys.

Boys pairings today send No. 1 Logan (12-0) against Floyd (4-4) t 4:30 p.m. and No. 7 Elida (4-7) against No. 2 Fort Sumner (10-2) at 7:30 p.m. On Thursday, it’s No. 4 Texico (7-5) against Grady (4-4) and No. 3 Melrose (10-1) against Dora at 7:30 p.m.

Girls quarterfinals today pit No. 1 Melrose (9-2) against Floyd (1-7) at 3 p.m. and No. 2 Fort Sumner (8-3) against Elida (7-5) at 6 p.m., while on Thursday it’s No. 4 Texico (4-7) against Dora (5-3) and No. 3 Logan (8-4) against Grady (5-4).

Last season at Texico, Fort Sumner defeated Logan to win the boys’ championship, while Melrose knocked off Logan in the girls’ finals.
