Carlsbad posts wins over Clovis

CARLSBAD – Clovis High’s wrestling squads went down to defeat at the hands of Carlsbad on Thursday in District 4-5A opening matches for both programs.

The Cavemen posted a 45-30 victory over the Wildcats while the Cavegirls notched a 34-12 triumph against the Lady Wildcats.

Three Clovis wrestlers recorded pins, including two for the boys. Eighth-grader Antonio Pena scored a pin against the Cavemen’s Mathyis Meier at 114 pounds, while junior Kaell Berry took out Carlsbad’s Hunter Harkness by fall at 133.

Other wins for the Cats were by forfeit – Shawn Pierce at 107 pounds, Joseph Abril at 114 and Michael Weist at heavyweight.

For the Lady Cats, Yocelyn Romero won by fall over the Cavegirls’ Breanna Trujillo at 126, and Sunnay Ward was credited with a forfeit victory at 152.

The next outing for the Cats and Lady Cats is scheduled for Jan. 11 in a district dual at Roswell High.
