Alleged home intruder facing charges

A man shot when he broke into a Clovis home on Dec. 4 is facing charges of breaking and entering, police said Monday.

Records show Judas Naranjo was critically injured after he kicked in a door in the 200 block of Rosa Boulevard and was shot by the homeowner.

Naranjo, 21, was recently released from a Lubbock hospital, but is still recovering from his injuries, Clovis Police Capt. Robert Telles said on Tuesday morning.

Police said a warrant for Naranjo’s arrest was obtained on Monday but has not been served.

“We’re going to let him recover a little more before we serve the warrant,” Telles said. “He’s not hiding at all.”

Naranjo could not immediately be reached for comment.

Court records show Naranjo was “really drunk” when the incident occurred about 11 p.m. on Dec. 4. In home-security video, Naranjo is heard telling the homeowner “This is my house, I … come here if I want to.”

Police about 45 minutes prior to the shooting had been called to a residence in the 100 block of Rosa where family members had asked Naranjo to leave.

According to police and court records:

The homeowner, identified in court records as David Baker, called 911 reporting someone was trying to break into his home. “Officers were immediately dispatched to the home. While officers were responding, the homeowner called 911 again stating the person had forced their way into their home and the caller said they shot the intruder.”

Police detectives learned Baker was awakened by someone banging on his front door. He said he repeatedly warned the person at the door he was armed with a gun and would shoot him if he came into the home.

“Moments later, the person kicked the homeowner’s front door open and entered their home,” records show.

“The homeowner again warned the person he was armed. Worrying about their safety, as well as for others inside the home, the homeowner fired one round at the person causing him to fall to the ground. The homeowner then said he called 911 again telling them they shot the person and to send an ambulance.”

Baker told police he did not know the intruder.

Records show Naranjo was at his brother’s home in the 100 block of Rosa earlier on the evening of Dec. 4. The brother wanted him removed due to being “intoxicated and aggressive,” court records show.

Naranjo had left the brother’s residence when police arrived, records show.

Baker first called police about six minutes after police “closed” the call from the 100 block of Rosa, records show.

Baker told law officers, “I didn’t want him getting ahold of me. I didn’t want him getting into the house … I just didn’t want him in my house.”

Court records show Baker fired one shot from a revolver.
