AMARILLO – Clovis High’s wrestling team had two girls and one boy place in the top eight in the season-opening Randall Ruckus over the weekend.

For the girls, sophomore Zulehiny Mendoza earned a seventh-place finish in the 114-pound weight division. She defeated Hereford sophomore Andreah Ozuna by first-period fall in the seventh-place matchup.

Also, junior Yocelyn Romero was eighth for the Lady Wildcats in the 126-pound division. She dropped her final-round clash against freshman Savannah Nichols of Lubbock Coronado on a second-period pin.

On the boys’ side, the Wildcats got a sixth-place finish from eighth-grader Leyton Collazo, who lost his final-round contest against Canyon junior Carter Hickey.

In team standings, the Lady Wildcats were 14th out of 17 teams with 21 points while the Cats came in 17th in the 18-school boys field, scoring 41 points.

Clovis wrestlers are back in action on Dec. 13 when they travel to Ruidoso for a triangular meet.
