Dora boys down Elida to take third

DORA – Juniors Ashton Davis and Aaron Combs combined for 35 points on Saturday, helping Dora defeat Elida 58-44 in the boys' third-place game of the J.P. Stone Invitational.

Davis scored 18 points and Combs had 17 for the Coyotes (2-1), who opened a 13-point halftime lead by outscoring the Tigers 13-3 in the second quarter. Elida (1-2) made a game of it, pulling to 35-30 by the end of the third stanza, before the Coyotes pulled away down the stretch.

Logan claimed the tournament championship with a 78-46 rout of Roy/Mosquero on Saturday night.

In other boys action on Saturday:

Grady 51, Reserve 45 – Freshman Zander Ciancio poured in a personal-best 27 points to help the Bronchos (2-1) beat the Mountaineers (0-3) for third place in the Steer Stampede, hosted by Magdalena H.S.

Reserve led 26-22 at halftime, but Grady outscored the Mountaineers 16-11 in the third stanza and then pulled away down the stretch.

Senior P.J. Marshall finished with 23 points for Reserve.

Texline 76, Texico 35 – The Wolverines ran into a buzzsaw as the Texas Class 1A Tornadoes (5-1) opened a 26-14 lead at the quarter and then held Texico (1-1) to 14 second-half points.

The Haydens had it for Texline as seniors Hayden Drumm (26) and Hayden Alston (25) combined for 51 points and nine 3-pointers, six coming from Drumm.

Texico's leading scorers were junior Alex Fuentes with 11 points and sophomore Bennett Wahlen with eight.

Amarillo River Road 38, Bovina 28 – In the finale of the Lubbock Roosevelt Invitational, the Wildcats kept the Mustangs still searching for their first win of the campaign, pulling away with a 12-6 edge in the final stanza.

Junior Dadrian Wallace and Alex Warren funneled in 12 points apiece for River Road (5-5), while Bovina (0-7) was paced by seven points from sophomore Angel Lara and six from senior Andrew Garcia.

In other action, Muleshoe opened its season in the Nazareth Invitational, splitting four games. The Mules lost to Olton 35-32 and to Shallowater 80-40 on Thursday, then came back to beat Borger 68-32 on Friday and Snyder 47-35 on Saturday.

In girls play on Saturday:

J.P. Stone Invitational – Corona pulled out a tight game in overtime as the Lady Cardinals (2-1) took third place with a 33-31 victory over Elida.

Six-foot-4 freshman Harper Dunn carried Corona to the win with 17 points. For the Lady Tigers (2-2), freshman Addison Yates netted eight points and sophomore Charity Smith and eighth-grader Ladey Victor chipped in seven apiece.

In the fifth-place matchup, Logan used a 21-point second quarter to gain control and the Lady Longhorns (2-1) went on to beat Dora 51-46. Sophomore Desta Rose tallied 17 points for Logan and senior Hailee Robertson added 10, while the Lady Coyotes (1-2) got 17 points from senior Faith Jasso and 10 from freshman Karen Inge.

Grady 39, Carrizozo 36 – The Lady Bronchos claimed fifth place in the Steer Stampede, holding off a second-half comeback by the Lady Grizzlies.

Grady (2-1) built a 19-9 halftime lead. Senior Taylor Foote scored 16 points for the Lady Bronchos, while senior December Garza added nine and junior Juanita Ramirez eight.

Top scorers for Carrizozo were senior Amelia Gabaldon with 11 points and junior Bryana Villanueva with 10. They combined for 13 points in the final frame, including a couple of 3s from Gabaldon.

Texline 47, Texico 33 – At Texico, the visiting Lady Tornadoes (5-4) used a 21-point second quarter to build an 18-point halftime cushion.

Freshman Jada Clay had 18 points and senior Lilly Dominguez contributed 11 for Texline. Junior Desiree Holman led Texico (1-1) with 12 points, followed by senior Cadence Smith with eight.

Clovis JV 46, Bovina 31 – At The Rock, the Lady Wildcats led 12-6 at the quarter and slowly pulled away from there against the Fillies (1-5).

Junior Gerreaya Dawson put in 13 points for the Lady Cats (3-0), who got scoring from 10 players in the match. Destiny Lara led the way for Bovina with 10 points.

Nazareth Invitational – Farwell, currently ranked fifth in Texas Class 2A by MaxPreps, saw its eight-game winning streak come to an end in the tournament championship game on Saturday, losing 79-50 to Seminole, ranked No. 8 in Class 4A.

In the consolation bracket, Gruver led 21-9 at the quarter and the Lady Greyhounds went on to beat Muleshoe 54-39 behind 12 points from senior Brooklyn Vasquez and 10 from junior Kinley Callaway. For the Lady Mules (3-10), senior Idaly Tarango and junior Megan Moran finished with eight points apiece.

On Friday, Childress handed Muleshoe a 67-39 defeat, breaking open a two-point game with a 30-point output in the second quarter. Sophomore Journey Prince scored 15 points for the Lady Bobcats (5-8), while senior Riley Woodard had 11 points for Muleshoe.
