Lady Cats get past Roswell High

ROSWELL – Clovis High's soccer girls overcame an early deficit to nip Roswell High 2-1 on Tuesday in a District 4-5A matchup.

With the win, the Lady Wildcats (12-3-1, 2-1 district) maintained their second-place standing in the district behind Hobbs (9-6-2, 3-0). Junior forward Ava Crain scored the deciding goal about 14 minutes into the second half on an assist from junior forward/midfielder Natalie Griego.

The Lady Coyotes (1-12-3, 0-3), outscored 32-7 for the season coming in, nonetheless struck first in the 28th minute when senior midfielder Amarys Leos found the back of the net. However, it took Clovis only about a minute to get the equalizer with senior midfielder Aspen Ulibarri converting a free kick from about 30 yards away.

Coach Ray Rodriguez said the Lady Cats had numerous good scoring opportunities throughout the match, but most sailed wide or high. For the contest, Clovis outshot the Lady Coyotes on goal 10-5.

"We worked the ball pretty good," he said. "We just weren't able to keep (shots) on frame."

Clovis needs to make sure it takes care of business against Roswell High and Carlsbad (10-7, 1-2) the next time through, and would then likely need to beat Hobbs by at least three goals to wrest the district title.

CHS travels to Carlsbad on Tuesday before visiting Hobbs next Saturday. The Lady Cats' final regular-season tilt will be on Oct. 26 against Roswell High at Leon Williams Stadium.

Roswell High 2, Clovis 0 (boys, Tuesday) – At Leon Williams Stadium, the Coyotes (9-8, 2-1 district) got goals from senior Avian Calvillo in the fourth minute and junior Josue Alva in the 25th and made them stand up. Calvillo also had an assist on Alva's goal.

After that, coach Greg Trujillo said, the Wildcats (6-11, 1-2) more than held their own.

"We gave up two early goals and then settled down," Trujillo said. "We put up a ton of shots and just couldn't convert.

"The ball was on their side the whole second half. We had a lot of good shots that we weren't able to finish."

Roswell High outshot the Cats on goal 6-5.

"Our keeper (junior Angel Avila) played pretty good, actually," Trujillo said. "We just weren't able to score."

Clovis hosts Carlsbad on Tuesday and Hobbs on Saturday before finishing the season at Roswell High on Oct. 26.

PHS squads drop district tilts – Portales High's boys competed fairly well with District 4-4A leader Artesia on Thursday night before dropping a 6-4 decision to the Class 4A No. 6 Bulldogs (11-5-1, 3-0 district) at Artesia.

The Rams (2-8-1, 1-2) returned to action on Saturday against New Mexico Military at Roswell. Their next outing is a district rematch on Thursday at Lovington.

Meantime, the Lady Rams (4-6-1, 0-3) absorbed a 6-0 loss at Roswell Goddard on Thursday. The Lady Rockets (9-6-1, 2-1) got three goals and two assists from sophomore forward Olivia Rossow, while senior forward/midfielder Lexi Pinon contributed a goal and an assist.

The next outing for the Portales girls is at 4 p.m. on Tuesday against Artesia at the PHS pitch.
