Mules cruise to fifth victory in row

  • Elida notches high-scoring win over Mountainair.

ABERNATHY – Muleshoe scored 21 first-quarter points and improved to 5-0 for the season on Friday night with a 47-0 rout of Abernathy.

Junior quarterback Nathan Martens ran for one touchdown and threw for another, a 45-yard pass to senior Ramzee Martinez in the opening stanza. Martens completed 19-of-23 passes for 196 yards.

Sophomore Josue Sigala and senior Daniel Sianez were both over 100 yards rushing and each ran for a touchdown. Sianez scored from 20 yards out and Sigala from 73 to extend the Mules' lead to 34-0 in the third frame.

Senior Sebastian Kirven caught six passes for 31 yards, while Martinez finished with three catches for 86. The Mules, who have won all five of their games by at least 20 points and outscored their opponents 252-61, posted a 22-11 advantage in first downs and a 497-228 margin in total yardage.

The Antelopes (2-3) turned the ball over three times on interceptions and had 11 penalties for 158 yards.

Senior Noah Cantu led the Mules' defense with 14 tackles (6 solos) while junior Aaron Morales had 13 stops (4 solos). Sigala had two interceptions and Martinez one.

Friday night, the Mules play their final non-district game at Brownfield.

Elida 64, Mountainair 45 – Senior Clayton Griffith scored four touchdowns, including three in the third quarter when Elida turned a five-point halftime lead into a 19-point margin en route to a home win over the Mustangs (2-3).

Griffith scored on a 25-yard run to cut Mountainair's early lead to 13-6. Senior Seth Jimenez added two of his four touchdowns in the final segment to keep the Tigers (2-3) relatively comfortable.

Griffith scored on runs of 10, 6 and 13 yards to stake Elida to a 52-47 advantage heading into the final stanza.

Jimenez caught TD passes of 46 and 39 yards from junior Dylan Dobbins, and also went in on runs of 2 and 3 yards. Other TDs for the Tigers came on a 2-yard run by Dobbins and a 65-yard pass play from sophomore Hayden Rubio to senior Klayton Nixon.

Elida returns to action on Friday when it travel sot Rahmah for a 7 p.m. start.

Friona 35, Farwell 27 – At Friona, the Chieftains erased an early eight-point deficit by outscoring the previously unbeaten Steers 29-6 and held on for the win.

Farwell (4-1) got touchdown runs of 75 and 3 yards from senior Corey Stancell, and junior quarterback Jonathan Armstrong's 27-yard run and 66-yard scoring pass to junior Ryder McElroy.

Stancell carried 19 times for 197 yards while Armstrong went 8-of-15 through the air for 122 yards and added 88 yards on the ground for the Steers, who held a 418-392 edge in total offense. Defensive leaders for the Steers were senior Jackson Wilbourn with 12 total tackles and sophomore Chris Reyes with 11.

After an open date this week, Farwell begins District 1-2A Division I action at Stratford on Oct. 6.

Shamrock 30, Bovina 28 – At Bovina, the Irish pulled off a stunning comeback, erasing a 28-0 deficit early in the third quarter to win late behind four touchdown passes from junior quarterback Philip Cook.

Senior quarterback Daniel Herrera led the Mustangs (1-4) to a 22-0 halftime lead, throwing a 74-yard touchdown pass to senior Miguel Lopez and then running for scores of 2 and 10 yards. Senior Angel Lara added 2PAT runs after the first two tallies.

Lopez then took the second-half kickoff 71 yards to paydirt, but the lead stayed 28-0 when Bovina was denied on its 2PAT run. Cook then pulled the Irish (3-2) to within striking range with third-quarter TD tosses of 30 and 9 yards to senior Terry Menefield and 11 yards to junior Rodney Holmes in the fourth.

Another 11-yard scoring pass to Holmes tied the contest, and sophomore Jessie Ramos ran in the conversion to give Shamrock the lead.

Cook was intercepted three times, but threw for 300 yards on 26-of-37. Menefield caught 11 passes for 146 yards and Holmes eight for 108.

Lara carried 16 times for 94 yards for Bovina, while Lopez grabbed four passes for 67 yards.

Bovina has a bye this week before opening District 3-2A Division II play at Ralls on Oct. 6.
