Elida upset bid falls short

ELIDA – Roy/Mosquero stopped Elida on the Blue's 1-yard line as time wound down and escaped with a 47-41 win over the Tigers on Friday night.

Roy/Mosquero (4-0), ranked second in 6-man behind Gateway Christian, built a 34-13 halftime lead before the Tigers (1-2) rallied back. The teams played a scoreless first segment.

Sophomore Hayden Rubio threw touchdown passes of 15 yards to sophomore Tayten Norman in the second quarter and 7 yards to senior Teagan Norman and 18-yards to senior Seth Jimenez in the fourth, the latter tying the game with a 2PAT kick from senior Klayton Nixon with about six minutes left.

Roy/Mosquero, though, went back in front about a minute later, then held on, stopping a fourth-and-goal play and then running out the clock.

Senior Clayton Griffith scored on a 22-yard run for Elida in the second period. Nixon kicked a pair of 2PATs for the Tigers, while Jimenez scored a single-point PAT on a run after the team's first score.

Elida hosts Gateway Christian in a 7 p.m. 6-man District 2 matchup on Friday.

In other area games on Friday:

Floyd 50, Hondo 0 – The visiting Broncos made short work of the Eagles (0-2), scoring 25 points in each of the first two cantos to end it on the 50-point lead rule at halftime.

Senior Daegan East threw three touchdown passes for Floyd (1-1) – including a pair of 52-yard plays to senior Benton Cain and a 14-yarder to senior Isaias Nieto. Cain also returned an interception 43 yards for a score, while Nieto scored on runs of 6, 24 and 63 yards.

Floyd's other score came on a 9-yard run by sophomore Isaak Bustamante in the second period. Bustamante and freshman Adan Nieto tacked on 1-point conversion runs for the Broncos.

Floyd returns to action with a 1 p.m. home game on Friday against Carrizozo.

Gateway Christian 54, Grady 18 – The Warriors improved to 3-0 with their 6-man District 2 win over the Bronchos at Grady.

Scoring for Grady (1-2) came on a 3-yard run by senior Zane Rush and touchdown passes of 34 and 25 yards from freshman Xavier Romero to freshman Zander Ciancio.

The Bronchos return to action on Friday, hosting Mountainair in a 7 p.m. non-district tilt.

On Saturday:

Dora 60, Carrizozo 6 – Junior Aaron Combs scored three times, including a 43-yard punt return for the game's first points, and threw a touchdown pass to lift the Coyotes (3-1) to an easy win at Hondo, called early in the third stanza by the 50-point rule.

Combs added scoring runs of 10 and six yards and threw a 13-yard TD pass to senior Cole Kircher, while junior Mason Christensen notched touchdown runs of 56, 65 and 14 yards, the latter putting the contest to an end. Kircher also ran for two scores covering 1 yard and 5 yards.

Kircher kicked a 2PAT, while Combs threw 1-point conversion passes to freshman Carson Kircher and sophomore Eric Michaels and Carson Kircher tossed a conversion pass to Combs.

Dora's next outing is on Friday night at Whitharral, Texas.
