Big second quarter boosts Randall to 50-23 triumph

One quarter got away from Clovis High's football team on Friday night.

Canyon Randall overcame an early 7-0 deficit with a 22-3 push in the second quarter and the Raiders went on to a 50-23 victory at Leon Williams Stadium.

Junior running back Dylan Ray led the charge, rushing for four touchdowns for Randall (1-1). Senior quarterback Tryston Sanchez added a pair of scoring passes to sophomore Kaison Benton.

"We didn't tackle very well," Wildcats coach Andrew McCraw said. "We played really well for long stretches of the ballgame, but we've just got to be able to be consistent."

Senior running back Kash Roberts rushed for 146 yards for the Cats (0-3), who finished with 246 yards on the ground and 316 total yards. Senior Jett Stone had one touchdown rushing and one receiving, while freshman quarterback Javi Jimenez went 5-for-11 for 65 yards in a backup role.

"Offensively, we played really good at times," McCraw said. "Javi came in and threw the ball really well, and Kash ran the ball well. And the offensive line played really good."

Roberts converted a muffed punt by Randall into a 3-yard TD run for a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter, but the Raiders followed with 29 unanswered points, including scoring runs of 31, 29 and 17 yards by Ray. His second touchdown came after the Raiders recovered an onside kick.

Roberts booted a 24-yard field goal for the Cats in the final minute of the half to make it 29-10.

Ray scored on a 43-yard run and Sanchez and Benson connected on a 23-yard TD for a 43-10 cushion midway through the third segment. Jimenez found Stone for a 23-yard score late in the quarter, and added a 21-yard touchdown run in the final canto.

Clovis entertains former longtime district rival Carlsbad (1-2) in a 7 p.m. kickoff on Friday at Leon Williams Stadium.
