High winds cause regional power outages

More than 8,500 Xcel Energy customers in the Clovis-Portales area were without power early Sunday evening.

Sustained winds at more than 50 mph and gusts in excess of 65 mph are blamed for the outages, which began just after noon on Sunday.

Farwell, Bovina and Muleshoe were also reporting outages in Texas.

The National Weather Service reports winds are expected to steadily diminish through tonight, but gusts at more than 40 mph are forecast each day through Thursday this week.

The city of Clovis reports police and fire personnel have been responding to downed power lines, power poles, downed trees, and severely damaged property throughout Sunday.
