Texico girls move to 2-0 in 6-2A with 41-38 win

SANTA ROSA – Maybe it’s not quite time to break up those Lady Wolverines. Nevertheless, the Texico girls are off to a solid start in District 6-2A.

Senior Catelyn Breshears and junior Kaya New combined for all seven Texico 3-pointers on Saturday as the Lady Wolverines turned back Santa Rosa 41-38. Texico (9-12, 2-0 district) led virtually all the way and held on down the stretch.

Breshears finished with four 3-balls and 22 points while New scored all nine of hers on 3-pointers for Texico, which led 27-18 at halftime. High scorer for the Lady Lions (14-7, 0-2) was junior Kasydi Chavez with 12 points.

In boys action on Saturday:

Grady 63, Portales JV 56 – At Grady, the Bronchos (6-10) opened a 19-10 lead after one quarter and kept the Rams at bay the rest of the way behind 26 points from junior Zane Rush.

Meantime, sophomore Deakin Ragland chipped in 12 points for the Bronchos, and senior Carlos Marin knocked in 11. For Portales, Joel Lujan led three players in double digits with 17 points, while Alex Luscombe followed with 15 and Xavier Tarpeh had 13.

Santa Rosa 74, Texico 57 – In District 6-2A at Santa Rosa, the Wolverines played the Lions to an 18-18 standoff through one quarter, but were outscored over each of the final three periods, including a 28-22 margin in a high-scoring third canto.

Santa Rosa (16-5, 2-1 district) drained 10 3-point baskets in the contest, including four by senior Jeremiah Huerta and three by junior Jykub Gage. Gage finished with a game-high 21 points, while senior Marcos Chavez netted 17 and Huerta finished with 14.

For the Wolverines (12-9, 1-1), junior Cade Figg notched all four of the team’s 3-pointers and tallied 20 points, while sophomore Alex Fuentes finished with 13 and senior Jahvon Askew 12.
