Weekend rain comes at harvest time

Sunday’s rain total in Clovis came in at 1.44 inches according to the National Weather Service.

Monday, the rain amount was smaller, 0.14 inch.

Rain totals varied around Curry and Roosevelt counties. The Portales Sunday rain total was 0.61 of an inch, Monday 0.15 of an inch.

Roosevelt County extension agent Patrick Kircher described the rain as “fairly widespread” and varied in amounts from what he heard.

“Silage harvest continues to move along,” Kircher said. “The rain had the potential to slow that down.”

Kircher said he’s heard producers are getting ready to dig peanuts.

“Cotton and grain sorghum are still a few weeks away from maturity and harvest,” Kircher said.

He said one of the biggest beneficiaries of the weekend rain is winter wheat.

“The moisture certainly helped winter wheat get established and has provided some moisture to get this crop down the road a few days,” Kircher said.

He said the late moisture will allow for range plants to strengthen their root reserves going into the winter.

Kircher said, “It’s c”ertainly beneficial to receive moisture in this high desert environment.

A request for information regarding the rain and harvest time from the Curry County Extension service was not returned by press time.
