Wolverines roll past Panthers in district tilts

PECOS — Texico’s baseball team returned to the .500 mark for the season on Thursday, rolling past Pecos 19-1 and 18-5 in a District 6-2A twin bill.

Leading 4-1 after the first inning in the opener, the Wolverines (7-7, 2-1 district) batted around twice in a 15-run third. Both games ended in five innings on the 10-run rule.

Sophomore Tristan Lucero went 3-for-3 in Game 1 with a single, a double, a triple and a walk, scoring twice and driving in one. Sophomore Daltyn Cain went 2-for-3 and junior Tristan Chavez finished 2-for-4 with Chavez, who pitched four innings for the win, and Cain each scored twice and drove in a pair.

In the nightcap, Texico took quick control with a nine-run first. Sophomore Kyle Gonser worked four innings on the mound and also went 3-for-5 with a double, three RBIs and three runs scored.

Junior Bryson Crow was 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and two RBIs, while junior Jadyn Gonser doubled in three at-bats, driving in two.

Melrose 20-10, Cimarron 5-0 — At Melrose, the Buffaloes improved to 5-4 with a 20-5, 10-0 non-district sweep against Cimarron.

In the opener, the Buffs collected 20 hits spread among 13 players. Senior Brody McAlister was 3-for-3 and scored twice while seniors Brandon Garcia and Logan DeVaney and sophomores Dathan Yeary and Michael Cardonita all had a pair of knocks.

Yeary, who struck out eight in three innings of relief, and Cardonita each had three RBIs. Cardonita homered and tripled and Yeary doubled and tripled, while Garcia and DeVaney each had a double.

In Game 1, Cardonita worked four innings, allowing no hits and striking out 10, while DeVaney was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Yeary went 2-for-3 with a double, a run scored and an RBI.

Also on Thursday, host Logan posted a 12-0, 10-0 District 3-1A sweep of Grady (7-2-1, 0-2). Gateway Christian won 25-1 and 12-0 in District 3-1A over Elida (1-5, 1-3).

In Tuesday area baseball:

Santa Rosa 5, Texico 2 — At Santa Rosa, the Lions plated four first-inning runs and went on to a district win over the Wolverines.

Sophomore Erik Davalos went 2-for-3 and was hit by a pitch for Texico, while junior Bryson Crow finished 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

On Tuesday, the Wolverines get another crack at Santa Rosa with a 4 p.m. doubleheader at Texico.
