Steers advance with two wins in Anson meet

ANSON, Texas — The Farwell Steers rolled into the semifinals of Anson’s 10-team tournament on Monday with a pair of wins, routing Post 73-25 and getting past Wellington 46-43.

The Steers (13-2) were slated to face Class 4A Sweetwater (11-8) in the semifinals on Tuesday, then play for either third place or the championship to wrap up the two-day event.

Farwell had no trouble with the winless (0-11) Antelopes, building a 44-14 halftime lead. Sophomore Corey Stancell led a balanced Steers attack with 15 points, while senior Juan Gaxiola had 14 and junior Adrian Nunez 10.

Junior Isaiah Crawford led Post with nine points.

Farwell outscored Wellington 14-5 in the final period to pull out the victory as Stancell had 13 points and Gaxiola chipped in 10. For the Skyrockets (2-2), coming off a quarterfinal loss to eventual champion Stratford in the Texas Class 2A Division I football playoffs, sophomore Carson Tarver had 13 points and senior Creighton Killian followed with 12.

Meantime, Farwell’s girls (18-3) beat Klondike 68-25 on Tuesday and had another game scheduled later. They split a pair of games on Monday, including a 46-33 win over Lorena.

The Lady Blue led Klondike 41-11 at halftime. Nine players scored for Farwell, led by freshmen Bella Jaime and Makylee Baldwin with 17 and 11 points, respectively, and sophomore Chloee Whitten with 10.

Only three players scored for the Lady Cougars (16-4), with sophomore Haelee Doughty finishing with 11 points.
