Last-second 3 lifts Mules to season-opening win

MULESHOE — It was quite the spectacular way for the Muleshoe boys to open their 2020-21 season.

Junior Irvin Torres nailed a 3-point shot from just inside halfcourt at the final buzzer, giving the Mules a 65-62 victory over Lockney on Tuesday night.

Muleshoe trailed the Longhorns (2-2) much of the way, but overcame a nine-point halftime deficit with a 42-point eruption in the second half.

Senior Brennen Davis finished with 21 points for the Mules, while Torres added 19.

In other Tuesday area boys games:

Elida 79, Grady 46 — The visiting Tigers carried a 12-point lead into the final segment before erupting for 31 points in the season opener for both teams.

Senior Rylan Creighton led all scorers with 25 points for Elida, while junior Aiden Yates added 17 and senior Gavin Hartman 10. Meantime, sophomore Zane Rush topped the Bronchos with 16 points.

Dora 53, San Jon 12 — At San Jon, Dora had the home team outmatched from the start, rolling to a 26-0 first-quarter lead in both teams’ season opener.

Sophomore Cole Kirchner led the Coyotes with 15 points, while junior Steven Masini tallied all 11 of his in the opening stanza.

Farwell 64, Texico 27 — At Farwell, the Steers were in control all the way, breaking it wide open by outscoring the Wolverines 20-2 in the final quarter.

Four players finished with 11 points for Farwell (4-0) — senior Leo Nunez, juniors Juan Gaxiola and Adrian Nunez and sophomore Corey Stancell. For Texico, playing its season opener, senior Kayden Queener also had 11 points.

Morton 62, Bovina 48 — The homestanding Indians went 10-for-12 from the free throw line in the final period, outscoring Bovina 22-14 to pull away.

Morton (3-1) also had a big second quarter, using a 20-5 surge to erase an early deficit.

For the game, the Indians converted 18-of-34 free throws for the game, while Bovina (1-1) finished 3-of-12. Senior Angel Lara scored 17 points for Mustangs, including 11 in the opening stanza to help stake his team to a 16-10 lead.

Roy/Mosquero 46, Clovis Christian 28 — At Roy, the Blue held CCS to one first-quarter point before the Eagles came back to play them pretty evenly from there in the opener for both squads.

Senior Lane Clavel scored 26 points for Roy/Mosquero, including 14-of-20 free throws. The Blue finished 28-of-44 from the line while the Eagles, who lost all five starters to fouls, were 2-of-5.

Junior Carter Teune provided most of the Eagles’ offense with 15 points.

In Tuesday area girls games:

Morton 72, Bovina 60 — In a foul-plagued contest, the host Lady Indians outscored Bovina 19-12 in the second quarter to open a six-point lead and pulled away from there.

Sophomore Ruby Gutierrez led Morton with 25 points, while seniors Galilea Perez and Nissa Navarrette followed with 13 and 12, respectively.

For the Fillies, junior Alyssa Marquez finished with 17 points, senior Pilly Saenz tossed in 12 and junior Makayla Luna added 11.

The teams were whistled for a combined 61 personal fouls, and both squads lost three players to fouls during the game.

Dora 53, San Jon 12 — In the season opener for both teams, Dora led 12-6 at the end of a quarter and stayed comfortably in front the rest of the way.

Sophomore Faith Jasso scored 14 points for Dora, while senior Brynn Dillard had 12 and sophomore Breanna Rodriguez chipped in nine. Leading the way for San Jon were sophomore Bailey McEwen and freshman Chantzee Elliott, each with nine points.

Farwell 83, Texico 11 — The Lady Blue, whose 11-player roster includes five juniors, three sophomores and three freshmen, cruised to their seventh win in eight games with a trio of 22-point stanzas .

Ten players scored for Farwell, all with at least three points. Five were in double digits — freshman Bella James with 17, freshman Landri Rickey and junior Charlie May Trimble with 13 apiece, freshman Makylee Baldwin with 12 and junior Jaelyn Smith with 10.

High scorer for the Lady Wolverines, playing their season opener, was junior Catelyn Breshears with four.
