Original Fireballs member dies

AMARILLO - Stanley Lark, an original member of The Fireballs, died Aug. 4 from complications related to bone cancer. He was 81.

Memorial services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church in Raton. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Johnson Mesa Church, the Raton Museum or the Norman Petty Studio in Clovis where Lark and The Fireballs recorded.

Lark, born July 27, 1940, in Raton, took to music early and joined the Night Riders at age 13. He sang and played bass with The Fireballs from 1958 to 1967, and rejoined the band following a gold mining career in Nevada.

He opened a club in Raton in 1975 called The Carriage House, and played at the club with his band Willow Springs. He also started a pair of car maintenance shops, one in Raton in 1998 and another in Trinidad, Colorado, the following year.

He is survived by six children, 15 grandchildren, an aunt and six siblings - including his sister, Sylvia Clark of Clovis.
