WOLFFORTH, Texas — Yes, it’s track and field season already.
While basketball will hang around for another week and a half, spring is here (kinda). So Clovis’ boys and girls track and field teams were competing this past weekend in the Don Black Invitational at Frenship High School’s Tiger Stadium in Wolfforth, Texas.
Clovis’ boys finished fourth out of 14 teams, earning 73 points — 19 off the pace of meet host Wolfforth Frenship and Lubbock Cooper, who tied for first with 92 points.
Midland Lee (75) was the only other team to finish ahead of Clovis. Lubbock Coronado (60) rounded out the top five.
The Lady Wildcats finished 11th with 14 points. Canyon’s 100 points were good enough for first place in the 17-team field, with Wolfforth Frenship (81), Midland (74), Lubbock Monterey (66) and Midland Lee (54) completing the top five.
The Clovis boys had first-place varsity finishes by: Ethan Culiver in the 400-meter dash (50.69); Jerrick Maldonado in the 800-meter run (1:59.48); and T.J. Gregg in the 1,600-meter (4:28.08) and 3,200-meter (9:40.94) runs.
Finishing second for the Clovis boys were: Maldonado in the 3,200 (9:41.75); Pacer Hill in the pole vault (13 feet, 6 inches); and the 4x400 relay team of Culiver, Brandon Mason, Maldonado and Skyler Segura (3:29.14).
Zecheriah Gonzales had a sixth-place finish (45 feet, 4 inches) for Clovis in the shotput.
Brandon Mason just missed points in the 200-meter dash, getting nudged out of sixth place by Amarillo Pala Duro’s Gavin Diaz, though each scored 23.10.
Camryn Barros had the Lady Wildcats’ best finish, taking second in the girls pole vault (10 feet, 6 inches).
Clovis’ Kiara Cox was fourth in the girls long jump (15 feet, 11 inches). The Lady Wildcats’ Annalysse Hamlett was fifth in the girls 3,200-meter run (12:54.39).
Kaleb Young of Clovis B won the boys junior varsity shot put, with a distance of 41 feet, 5 1/2 inches.
Clovis will compete in the two-day Canyon (Texas) Invitational beginning this Friday.
