ENMU promotes Shaw to associate head coach

PORTALES — When Tres Segler decided to fill the role of associate head coach for his men’s basketball program at Eastern New Mexico University, he went with somebody he trusted long before he’d arrived in Portales.

That person was Andre Shaw, whose promotion to the position was announced Friday by Segler.

The two worked together as assistants at fellow Lone Star Conference school Midwestern State until Segler took the ENMU job in 2016. They were reunited last year, when Shaw took an assistant job with the Greyhounds.

“Andre and I have been with each other long enough that we’re more like brothers than we are co-workers,” Segler said. “He definitely covers up my weaknesses with his strengths, and we’re able to get so much done because both our work ethics match up.”

Segler spent his first three seasons without an associate head coach. The Greyhounds are 37-46 under Segler with a pair of LSC tournament appearances. In Shaw’s first season helping Segler on the bench, the team went 13-14 with a 10-8 LSC record.

“Andre has worked incredibly hard to break down the many different coaching systems that exist in the Lone Star Conference,” Segler said. “He's got a great eye for recognizing what an opposing team wants to do, and always prepares our team for how we can stop opponents.”..

During his collegiate career at Division III Western New England, Shaw averaged 17 points per game over three seasons.
