Prep soccer: Portales girls net first win

August 26, 2018

ROSWELL — The Portales girls soccer team ended the Roswell Tournament on a high note on Saturday, recording a 1-0 victory over Lovington. For the Rams, it was their first win of the young 2018 season.

It was an eighth grader, Adeli Hernandez, who was responsible for the only goal of the match, which was scored in the 33rd minute. Senior Rebekah Christiansen provided the assist.

Coach Ruben Tellez felt Portales had a good quantity of scoring chances, but still needs to work on quality.

“We had six breakaway touches,” Tellez said, “and each time, our touches were a little too hard.”

Nonetheless, the Rams (1-1) notched the victory over the Wildcats (0-2), who will serve as a District 4-4A rival in 2018. Goalie Jasmine Valenzuela had six saves in the shutout.

“We are learning and gaining confidence,” Tellez said. “Our defensive backs were key in that they were fairly solid and prevented a lot of big plays from happening.”

The Rams will next host Roswell in their home-opener on Thursday.
