Prep soccer: Sandia beats both Clovis teams 3-0

CLOVIS — After a pair of 3-0 losses to Sandia on Tuesday, both Clovis soccer teams are looking at two sets of odds for making the Class 6A playoffs.

Those odds, unfortunately, are slim and none.

Both Clovis girls coach Traci Sievers and boys coach Greg Trujillo figure the only way their teams can make the playoffs is to take a win Saturday against La Cueva. But they admit that may not be enough.

The girls visit La Cueva at 1 p.m., while the boys host the Bears at 3 p.m.

At Leon Williams Stadium, Sydney Groth and Lindsey Elison both had a goal and an assists to help the Matadors (10-6-1, 7-2) remain in second place in the 2-6A race, while knocking Clovis under the .500 mark.

Clovis (8-9-2) is now 2-5-2 in district play. Lady Cats coach Traci Sievers thought the team actually played better than it did during its win over Sandia in Albuquerque.

"When we were up there," Siever said, "I believe all three of our goals were off direct kicks. I think today, overall, it seemed like we played better than we did up there.

"We had a couple of chances, but they were ready for them today."

In Albuquerque, Trujillo said the game was tied at the half, but Clovis (10-9, 4-5) overplayed a pass eight minutes into the second half and Sandia's player just tapped it in.

Truijllo said one of the other two goals came on a similar play.

"We played well in the first half; we just made those critical mistakes," Trujillo said. "Our chances of getting in are pretty thin unless we can beat La Cueva. We learned a tough lesson today as far as those little mistakes."
