PORTALES — Behind an early barrage on offense and a strong outing from freshman pitcher Wendy Baeza, the Portales High softball team defeated Clovis High 8-1 on Tuesday at Wheeler Park.
The Lady Rams (12-7) did all their damage in the first two innings, scoring five in the first and three in the second. Baeza, who recently came back from a shoulder problem, tossed a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts and also delivered a single and a two-run homer at the plate.
"(Baeza) just amazes me," Lady Rams coach Robbie Crowley said. "She's been coming out here since her injury and been working her tail off to get back into that shape she was in at the beginning of the season.
"She's just going to get better and better, because she wants to get better."
Baeza, who homered, and Shelbi Walker each drove in a pair of runs for the Lady Rams and they were on cruise control after the second inning.
"It's always nice to hit the ball when you have runners on," Crowley said. "As far as putting up eight runs on 11 hits, we are hitting the ball at the right time."
Lady Wildcats junior Celeste Chavez took the loss, but pitched well anyway, especially after the second inning, CHS coach Brandi Thomas said. Chavez also had the only hit and RBI for the Lady Cats (2-22).
"She threw well," Thomas said. "That's the best I've seen her throw. I give credit to Portales — they hit the ball. Celeste did a heck of a job, though."
Both teams return to action with home doubleheaders on Saturday, Clovis entertaining La Cueva at 1 p.m. at Lady Wildcat Field while PHS welcomes Moriarty in an 11 a.m. start.
