RUIDOSO — The Portales Lady Rams bounced back from a first-game, run-rule loss, scoring 11 times in the top of the seventh to beat Ruidoso 20-9 on Tuesday in a District 4-4A softball doubleheader.
Freshman Wendy Baeza, pitching for the first time in a while because of a shoulder problem, earned the victory in the nightcap. She also drove in five runs despite going 1-for-4 with two walks.
“I’m proud of the girls for responding in that second game,” PHS coach Robbie Crowley said. “When you score seven runs as a Portales team, you should win. We’ve got to play behind whatever pitcher is in the circle.”
The Lady Rams (9-7, 3-1 district) led 1-0 through three innings in the nightcap before the scoring took off. They scored five runs in the sixth for a 9-2 lead, then salted it away in the seventh to make it 20-6.
Portales took advantage of 10 errors in the game by the Lady Warriors (7-10, 3-1).
“It’s good to get a split on the road,” Crowley said.
In the opener, Ruidoso scored six times in the bottom of the sixth to end it on the 10-run rule. Lia Mosher and Grace Hooker each homered and combined for seven hits and seven RBIs for the Lady Warriors.
Kimberlie Hay led a 10-hit PHS attack, going 3-for-4.
