1976: The corn harvest came to an abrupt halt as much of eastern New Mexico received up to 5 inches of snow.

Yards were decorated with snowmen and “there was even a giant snow jack-o-lantern in a yard on Lea Street” in Clovis, the Clovis News-Journal reported.

A travel advisory was declared for much of New Mexico as roads became hazardous by mid-day.

1956: Fort Sumner was preparing for its semiannual sports car races.

Entries had been received from New Mexico, Texas, Colorado, Arizona and California.

The Fort Sumner Lions Club sponsored the competition each fall and spring.

1956: Area baseball fans had been invited to a free buffet dinner hosted by the Clovis Redlegs baseball team.

The dinner, to be held at Clovis’ Silver Grill restaurant, was “strictly a get-acquainted affair,” the Clovis News-Journal reported.

The purpose was to give fans a preview of the 1957 season for the club, which was affiliated with Major League Baseball’s Cincinnati franchise.

The MLB team had changed its name from Reds to Redlegs in 1953 following concerns some might associate them with the threat of Communism.
