Commission to swear in new member

Staff report

The Clovis city commission is slated to begin its meeting tonight with seven commissioners. It plans to leave it with eight.

The commission will, upon approving the agenda for the 5:15 p.m. meeting at the North Annex of the Clovis-Carver Public Library, elect and swear in one of six applicants to fill the remainder of Bobby Sandoval’s term.

Sandoval, who won re-election in March, resigned his post, effective Sept. 30. The commission, by charter, must fill the vacancy within 30 days.

The six citizens applying for the position are Ronnie Anaya, Helen Casaus, Kevin Cass, David Bryant, Jose Griego and Sharesse Taylor-Warfel.

Each candidate will be allowed a brief presentation prior to the commission’s vote.

Other agenda items include:

• Appointment of three members to the planning and zoning commission. The terms of Carolyn Spence, Terry Moberly and Jonathan Wilson expired.

Applicants include Spence, Connie Belcher, Charles Brown, Shawun Burns, Ann Corsey, Terry Davis, Steve Hill, Dhawal “Danny” Jariwala, George Jones and Jamaal Williams.

The item was delayed from the Oct. 4 meeting, due to concerns from Commissioner Tom Martin the city improperly advertised two vacancies instead of three.

• A purchase of 2 1/2 lots on the 800 block of Main Street for $20,000 and resolution of city liens filed against the property.

• Renewal of medical insurance with United Healthcare. Employee payments will remain the same, but the city will receive a $149,374 decrease in premiums.

• An amendment to the city’s professional services contract with Capitol Consultants and John Ryan of Albuquerque. The contract, which has Ryan as a federal consultant, would as of Nov. 1 allow Ryan to engage in limited state-related advocacy and assistance on a pro bono basis.

• A street closure on the 100 block of Main Street from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 31 for a “trunk or treat” Halloween event.

• A $50,000 budget transfer to cover the city’s weed removal contracts.

• A waiver of fees for the El Llano Grande District of the Conquistador Council Boy Scouts to have a picnic this weekend at Ned Houk Park. If approved, the scouts would pick up the park and complete a service project approved by the parks and recreation director.

The meeting also includes a 4:30 p.m. executive session covering acquisition or disposal of property and pending or threatened litigation.
