Meetings watch: Clovis Cultural and Ethnic Affairs Committee

The Clovis Cultural and Ethnic Affairs Committee met Tuesday at the Clovis-Carver Public Library. Some highlights:

• The 25th annual Ethnic Fair is set for Saturday at Hillcrest Park. The committee will begin setting up at 7 a.m. The event schedule begins at 8 a.m. with a food drive.

• Committee Chairman and Ethnic Fair Coordinator Selmus Price said the cultural workshops in batik, tie-dye, drums and dance began Monday. The entries were split between the morning and evening sessions. The workshops continue through Thursday.

• Price said he’s expecting to obtain T-shirts for the fair no later than Thursday.

• It was estimated there are seven volunteers from Cannon Air Force Base signed up to assist with setup of the fair and six signed up for teardown. Air Commandos across the base are still being invited to take part in Saturday’s activities.

• Food vendors wanting to be a part of the fair have until noon today to get their permits from the Environment Department. Three or four vendors have already done so, Price said.

• The Fun Run and Walk entries are coming in “relatively slow,” Price said. The deadline is noon today. The fee goes up from $12 to $15 if anyone wishes to sign up after the deadline. Price said he expects some to sign up on-site.

• Price said he has two or three car show entries, but most of the car show participants will sign up on-site and pay an extra $5. The car show is slated for 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Hillcrest Park.

• Three people are expected to participate in the Ethnic Fair talent show, but Price said he might consider accepting entries past the deadline, which is noon today. The talent show is slated for 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. during the fair.

• About 15 exhibitors signed up for the fair, not including food vendors.

• Price confirmed Jessica Banister will serve as emcee for the Ethnic Fair.

• The next committee meeting is slated for noon on Aug. 16.
