Matthew Lusk is in Akron, Ohio, for the 2016 Firstenergy All-American Soap Box Derby World Championship.

His purpose, he said, is to represent his community and God.

The competition begins today.

After winning the 15th Clovis Soapbox Derby, the 9-year-old, first-time racer started looking forward to the international competition that will see him race against champions of similar races from around the world.

The event itself will hold many surprises for Matthew and his family.

He said he is “excited, because I don’t know what to expect.”

His car preceded him in the journey, being placed on a VIP list due to it being in good condition for the race.

To prepare himself, Matthew said he has been praying for the race and is ready to race for New Mexico.

This will be his one chance to represent Clovis at the international competition. Rules designate that a competitor who wins their local competition is barred from competing again in the same division.
