1976: The Clovis YMCA had announced its board of directors, which included Gloria White, Eldon Smith, Harry Vohs and J. A. McDaniel.

The Y had 3,650 members, according to the Clovis News-Journal.

1956: H.V. and Ida Cade, who lived at 708 E. Brazos in Portales, had recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.

He was 86. She was 81.

She described their first meeting, when she was 15, in Kerrville, Texas.

“He was serving barbecue at a dinner,” she said, “and I looked him over and decided he must be that new boy whose folks had just moved into a house across the river.”

“Young people did most of their courting on foot those days,” Mr. Cade said, “and it wasn’t long till we were walking to church together.”

They married a year later and lived in a log house on the banks of the Guadalupe River.

They moved to the Portales area in 1931.

1946: Perfection Bakery, located at 118 E. Grand in Clovis, offered cakes, pies, cookies, rolls, salt-rising bread and more.

Orders could be left on Mondays and Thursdays.
