Growing up in rural Lincoln County, Mickie Vega remembers being somewhat intimidated when she first attended Eastern New Mexico University.

Once she settled in, she earned an associate arts degree with an emphasis on paralegal studies and a bachelor’s degree in universal studies with an emphasis on criminal justice and psychology — all while working full time and raising a family.

Starting with her first job out of college — as a trial court administrative assistant, Vega has pursued her passion for the justice system, including being appointed as a Lincoln County magistrate judge in April 2014 by the governor.

Running as a Republican, the Capitan native was elected to a four-year term in November.

What is your favorite aspect of being a judge?

“The challenge, the ongoing learning, and researching laws ... In addition, the ability to assist and to make a difference (to the extent I can) in individuals who may have addictions or difficulties.”

What is the hardest part?

“Knowing that a defendant is guilty after the defendant has admitted or confessed to an alleged charge, but having to rule on dispositive motions due to technicalities, or the law not being followed.”

Most memorable ENMU professor? “Attorney Sheryl L. Saavedra (ENMU-Roswell).”

What song makes you think of your time at ENMU?

“I’d do Anything for Love” by Meatloaf

What is a skill you developed at ENMU that still serves you today?

“Dedication, confidence, perseverance, and dignity, which I believe is one of the most vital characteristics of my profession.”

What was the biggest national issue while you were attending ENMU and what was your stance on it?

“President Bill Clinton appointed the second female Associate Justice Ruth Joan Bader Ginsburg.”
