Weekend weather: Not cold enough for precipitation to be snow

Staff report

The National Weather Service lifted a winter storm watch late Thursday, saying warmer temperatures sweeping in from California will reduce chances of any significant snowfall today or through the weekend for Clovis or Portales.

There will be moisture, said weather service Meteorologist Jason Frazier. Just not in the form of accumulated snowfall.

“We have a lot of moisture coming in,” said Frazier. “It just doesn’t look like we’re getting temperatures low enough to get the kind of significant snowfall you’ve had in Clovis and Portales recently.”

For today and Saturday, expect rain during the day and a mix of rain and small amounts of snow as temperatures fall in the evening, according to Frazier. Highs today are expected to be in the upper 30s; a low of about 30. Saturday’s high is predicted to be 37 with a low of 28.

The chances of precipitation are 70 percent today and 60 percent Saturday, according to the weather service.
