George Beggs said he’s been nervous for months.
“I was sweating from the beginning. I knew I had tough competition,” he said.
The Roosevelt County assessor’s race was decided Tuesday by less than 300 votes — 1,988 for the Republican Beggs, 1,693 for Royene Tivis, a Democrat.
Beggs said the campaign process was long and dreadful, but he was happy with the end result.
“I’m glad it’s over with. Royene is a good person and I knew she would be good competition,” he said.
Beggs said he plans to “keep going like I’ve been going” when he takes over as county assessor.
“I’m going to do the best job I can for the Roosevelt County taxpayers,” he said.
Beggs credited his win to the citizens of Roosevelt County, saying they pulled together to elect him.
“I want to thank Roosevelt County citizens for the votes, support, and prayers,” Beggs said.
Tivis could not be reached for comment Tuesday night.
