Fishing report — Aug. 21

This fishing report, provided by Bill Dunn and the Department of Game and Fish, has been generated from the best information available from area officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

Northeast

Charette Lakes: Trout fishing was slow to fair using Power Bait and spinners. Fishing for perch was fair using worms.

Cimarron River: Stream flow below Eagle Nest on Monday was 8.1 cfs. Trout fishing was fair to good using tricos, stimulators, ants, brassies, salmon eggs and worms. We had no reports from the Gravel Pit Lakes.

Clayton Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure was extremely light.

Conchas Lake: Fishing was fair to good trolling deep-running crank baits for white bass. Fishing for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass was slow to fair using tubes, crank baits and chigger craws. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp was in the mid to upper 70s.

Coyote Creek: Fishing was slow and fishing pressure was light.

Eagle Rock Lake: Trout fishing was very good using Power Bait, Kastmasters and spinners.

Eagle Nest Lake: Hot spot for perch: Fishing was very good again this past week for anglers using worms from shore and from anchored boats for perch. Fishing was fair using Platte River specials tipped with Power Bait for rainbow trout and an occasional kokanee. A few trout and kokanee were caught by anglers trolling Panther Martins and Z Rays. We had no reports on northern pike.

Gallinas River: Trout fishing was very good using worms, salmon eggs, elk hair caddis and hares ears.

Hopewell Lake: Trout fishing was fair using Power Bait and worms.

Lake Alice: Trout fishing was fair using Power Bait, Pistol Petes, worms and salmon eggs.

Lake Maloya: Trout fishing was good using Pistol Petes, wooly buggers, pheasant tails, worms and Power Bait. A few small perch were caught by anglers using worms.

Los Pinos: Trout fishing was good using bead-head hares ears, elk hair caddis, worms and salmon eggs.

Manzano Lake: Fishing was fair using small spinners and Kastmasters for smallmouth bass and an occasional trout. A few trout were also caught by anglers using worms.

Maxwell Lake 13: Fishing was slow for all species.

Monastery Lake: Trout fishing was very good using a wide assortment of flies, garlic Power Bait, salmon eggs and worms. Len Lo Presto and wife Linda of Las Cruces had a great time here last Friday. The caught and released several trout while using gray beetles and zebra midges.

Morphy Lake: Fishing was slow.

Mt View Ponds: Trout fishing was good using elk hair caddis and worms.

Pecos River: Water flow near the town of Pecos on Monday was 64 cfs. Trout fishing was good for some and very good for others over the past week. Anglers did well using worms, salmon eggs, night crawlers, stimulators and prince nymphs. We had no reports on catfish.

Red River: Water flow near the hatchery on Monday was 50 cfs. Fishing was good using small wooly buggers, copper John Barrs, elk hair caddis, night crawlers and salmon eggs. Fishing at the hatchery pond was good using salmon eggs and Power Bait.

Rio Costilla: Water flow below the dam as of Monday morning was 51 cfs. Trout fishing was good using PMDs, hares ears and small hopper patterns.

Rio Grande: Water flow near the Taos Junction Bridge on Monday was 360 cfs. Fishing was slow to fair using wooly buggers, spinners, night crawlers and salmon eggs for trout. We had no reports on other species.

Rio Hondo: Stream flow near Valdez on Monday was 23 cfs. Fishing was very good using stimulators, hares ears and copper John Barrs.

Rio Mora: Stream flow near Terrero on Monday was 14 cfs. Trout fishing was very good using worms, salmon eggs, copper John Barrs and stimulators.

Rio Pueblo: Stream flow near Penasco on Monday was 13 cfs. Fishing was good using parachute Adams and San Juan worms for trout.

Santa Barbara: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Shuree Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Springer Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using cut bait and chicken liver for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Storrie Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure was very light.

Ute Lake: Fishing was very good jigging slab spoons and trolling crank baits for white bass. The whites could be found at the mouths of coves and suspended at 15 to 17 feet over 30 feet of water. Fishing was fair using tubes, chigger craws and curly tail grubs for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. A few walleye were caught by anglers using slab spoons and spinner-night crawler rigs but the walleye were scattered. Fishing for all other species was slow. The surface water temp was in the high 70s.

Northwest

Abiquiu Lake: Fishing was fair to good using spinner-night crawler rigs and curly tail grubs for walleye. Most of the walleye were caught in 15 to 20 feet of water and just off the bottom. Fishing was fair using jerk baits, buzz baits, tubes and crank baits for small smallmouth bass. Fishing for catfish was slow but there were a few caught by anglers using liver and hot dogs.

Animas River: Water flow near Aztec on Monday morning was 256 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Albuquerque Area Drains: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bluewater Lake: Fishing from the bank was slow but fishing from boats was good using jerk baits, large streamers, and topwater lures for tiger musky. We had no reports on other species. Anglers should be aware that it is illegal to use bait fish at this lake.

Brazos River: Trout fishing was good using worms, elk hair caddis and parachute Adams.

Canjilon Lakes: Fishing on the upper lake was fair using salmon eggs, Pistol Petes, spinners and Power Bait for trout.

Chama River: Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 300 cfs and 407 cfs respectively. Fishing below El Vado was fair to good using worms, Power Bait and salmon eggs for rainbow trout. A few browns were caught by anglers using Rapalas and Panther Martins. We had no reports from below Abiquiu.

Cochiti Lake: Fishing was fair to good using crank baits, jerk baits and topwater lures for white bass. Fishing for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass was slow to fair using topwater lures, jerk baits, tubes, chigger craws and senkos. Fishing was fair to good using hot dogs and liver for catfish.

El Vado Lake: Fishing was fair to good trolling Z Rays and Panther Martin spinners at the north end of the lake for largemouth bass. Fishing was good using corn and worms for carp. We had no reports on other species.

Fenton Lake: Trout fishing was very slow.

Heron Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. All boat ramps are now closed due to low water conditions.

Jackson Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure was very light.

Jemez Waters: Stream flow on the Jemez as of Monday was 24 cfs. Fishing on the Rio Cebolla was good using elk hair caddis, hares ears, worms and salmon eggs. Fishing on the Rio Las Vacas was slow to fair using elk hair caddis, ants and parachute Adams. Fishing on the Jemez and Rio Guadalupe was slow. We had no reports from the East Fork or San Antonio.

Laguna Del Campo: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Farmington: Fishing was slow for all species.

Navajo Lake: Fishing was fair to good using senkos, finesse worms, jerk baits and topwater lures for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Most of the bass action was on the San Juan arm and on main lake points. Fishing was very good using crank baits in shallow water for northern pike. The best reports came from anglers fishing the San Juan arm near the Colorado state line. Fishing was fair trolling Z Rays, Arnies and Panther Martins tipped with corn for kokanee. We had no reports on other species.

San Gregorio: We had no reports from anglers this week.

San Juan River: Water flow below Navajo Dam on Monday was 667 cfs. Trout fishing through the Quality Waters was good using Griffith’s gnats, small parachute Adams, red larvae, small midge patterns and chocolate foam wing emergers. Fishing through the bait waters was good using salmon eggs, night crawlers, Power Bait, pins minnows and wooly buggers.

Santa Cruz Lake: Fishing from the bank was slow to fair using Power Bait, spinners and salmon eggs for trout. We had no reports from boaters.

Seven Springs Brood Pond: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Tingley Beach: Fishing at the Youth Pond and Central Pond was slow to fair using shrimp, homemade dough bait, hot dogs and liver for catfish. A few bluegill were caught by anglers using worms. Fishing at the Bob Gerding Catch and Release Pond was slow.

Trout Lakes: Fishing was good using worms, Power Bait and elk hair caddis for trout.

Southwest

Bear Canyon: Fishing was slow for all species.

Bill Evans Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure was very light.

Caballo Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using minnows, night crawlers and liver for channel catfish. White bass fishing was fair for anglers trolling crank baits and casting topwater lures. We had no reports on other species.

Elephant Butte Lake: Fishing was fair to good trolling white, chartreuse and chrome crank baits for white bass. Fishing was fair using topwater lures, crank baits, jerk baits, tubes, grubs and finesse worms for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was good using shiners, shrimp, hot dogs, chicken liver and night crawlers for catfish. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp was in the high 70s and low 80s.

Escondida Lake: Fishing was generally slow for all species but there were a few catfish caught by anglers using hot dogs and liver.

Gila River: Water flow on the Gila as of this past Monday was 142 cfs. Fishing on the main river and on the West Fork was slow. We had no reports from the Middle or East Fork.

Glenwood Pond: Fishing was good using Power Bait for stocked rainbow trout.

Lake Roberts: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Percha Dam: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Quemado Lake: Fishing was slow but there were a few trout caught by anglers using Power Bait. We had no reports on tiger musky.

Rio Grande: Water flow below Elephant Butte on Monday was 12 cfs. Fishing was slow for all species.

Snow Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Young Pond: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Southeast

Bataan Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Black River: Stream flow at Malaga on Monday was 5.8 cfs. We had no reports from anglers.

Blue Hole Park Pond: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bonito Lake: Closed.

Bosque Redondo: Fishing was slow for all species.

Bottomless Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Brantley Lake: Anglers are to practice catch-and-release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Carlsbad Municipal Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Chaparral Park Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using night crawlers for channel catfish. We had no reports on other species.

El Rito Creek: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Eunice Lake: Fishing was fair using night crawlers and hot dogs for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Green Meadow Lake: Fishing for catfish was slow to fair using night crawlers. We had no reports on other species.

Greene Acres Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Grindstone Reservoir: Fishing was good using Kastmasters, Power Bait and salmon eggs for trout. Anglers having the best success were using Power Bait. Fishing was slow to fair using salmon eggs and worms for catfish. Fishing was good using worms for bluegill and small bass. Thomas Armendariz reported good trout fishing near the parking area and good bluegill and bass fishing along the weed line near the dam.

Jal Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Van: Fishing was slow to fair using night crawlers, hot dogs and liver for catfish. Fishing for all other species was slow.

Oasis Park Lake: Fishing was good using night crawlers, homemade dough bait and hot dogs for channel catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Pecos River: Stream flow below Sumner Lake on Monday was 104 cfs. Fishing was slow for all species. A few catfish were caught by anglers using liver and night crawlers.

Perch Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Ruidoso River: Stream flow at Hollywood on Monday was 10 cfs. Fishing was slow.

Santa Rosa Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using live crawdads for catfish and an occasional smallmouth bass and walleye. We had no reports on other species. The lake level rose another six inches over the past week.

Sumner Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure was light.
